Mary E. Turnbull

Nov 22, 1916 - May 20, 2016

With a big moon and bright stars, Mary Elizabeth Matula Turnbull reclaimed her freedom. She painted the blue Colorado morning sky with gold and red on her way to Him. Orphaned in 1918 by the influenza epidemic, she was on her own in 1930. Mary found a way to finish high school and nursing school. As a registered nurse, she became 1Lt. Mary Matula, US Army, Women's Army Nurse Corps, during World War II. Then Maj. Jim Turnbull fell for her and they married. Mary went on to work in Sioux Valley Hospital and to be the Washington High School nurse. In retirement, Mary and Jim traveled the world but always called Sioux Falls, SD home.

Her daughters, Lt. Col. Jean (Hank) Freitas, USAF, Ret, Betsy (Ken) Hixson, Mary Ann (Howard) Kucera, her five grandchildren and three great grandchildren cherish the smart, funny and giving woman that she was.

Mary will be interred in the Black Hills National Cemetery with military honors. Any who wish to honor her may make a donation to the American Humane Society.
