Matthew Friedrich Barz

Matthew Friedrich Barz was born on February 14th, 1967. He was the son of Harley and Dora (Faust) Barz. Growing up in Sheldon, IA he was active in athletics, band and drama. He graduated from Sheldon High School in 1985.

He attended Wayne State College (Wayne, Nebraska) for 2 years and played football. He transferred to University of Northern Iowa and graduated with highest honors in 1991. He taught in Iowa for 2 years and moved to the mountains of Colorado in 1993.

He was a substitute teacher for 2 years and had taught at Longs Peak Middle School for the last 20 years. He loved working with the 8th grade students teaching them English and History. He also coached 8th grade boys and girls basketball.

His passion was the mountains. He spent most of his free time hiking, biking and skiing in the mountains. He was fortunate to have good friends that shared his passion. He also enjoyed lively discussions and cherished time spent with friends and family.

Matt is survived by his parents, sisters, Christa (Jeff) Duncanson, Brandon, SD, Carrie (Michael) Dvorak, Fort Worth, TX. Nephew, Riley Duncanson and nieces: Kailee Duncanson, Caitlin (Jarred) Ross, Mackenzie Dvorak, Carley Dvorak and Findley Dvorak. He is also survived by close friends, Kris Hagemeyer, Dan and Karen Cribby and Rich and Holly Kenyon and many other friends. Matt was preceded in death by his grandparents, Harvey and Mabel Barz and Glenn and Grace Faust and their infant son, Richard.

On Saturday, September 17, 2016 at Noon a Memorial Service for colleagues, family and close friends will be held at Shupe Homestead, Longmont, CO.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Matt's name to the Longmont Humane Society.
