Mass of Christian Burial for Melvin R. George, 86, of Fairmont, MN will be 10:30 a.m. Thurs., Jan. 19, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Fairmont. Visitation 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Wed., Jan. 18, at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Burial will be Fri. morning, Jan. 20, at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Mpls.

Melvin died Friday afternoon, January 13, 2017 at St. Luke's Lutheran Care Center in Blue Earth.

Melvin Raymond George was born on March 16, 1930 in Dell Rapids, SD, the son of William and Clara (Mergen) George. Melvin attended the Chester School in South Dakota. On September 9, 1952 he entered the U.S. Army and served in the Infantry 2nd Division during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on June 30, 1954 and returned to Dell Rapids. Melvin was united in marriage to Yvonne Mary Elsinger on April 4, 1956 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dell Rapids. They started out in Dell Rapids and then moved to Coleman, SD, Franklin, SD before moving to Marshall, MN in 1965. They settled in Fairmont in 1997. Melvin was a carpenter for 39 years.

Survivors include six children and their families: Mary Forster and husband, Darrell, of Maple Grove, MN and their children, Christian, Seth, Clinton and Shannon; Stephen George and his wife, Renee, of Colorado, and their children, Brandon and Capri; Paul George and his wife, Reba, of Oklahoma and their children, Tracy, Brian and Blaine; Roman George and his wife, Linda, of Cold Spring, MN and their children, Peter and Madeline; Kateri Wellman and her husband, Roger, of Fairmont, and their children, Jacob (Tayna), Clarissa (Scott) and Ethan; Philip George and his wife, Cheryl, of Byron, MN and their children, Mitchell and Kate; great grandchildren, Gunner, Colton and Corinn Wells, Kade and Kash Wellman, Lucas and Avery Mosloski; Melvin's brothers and sisters, Walter George, Bernetta Seifert, Frances Reschevik, Arlean Schmidt, Helen Schnieders, Lucille Woodruff and her husband, John, Geraldine Pisklak and her husband, Steve; sister-in-law, Armella George; many nieces and nephew, other relatives and friends

In addition to his parents and wife, Melvin was also preceded in death by one granddaughter, Gabriel Linda George; brother, Cyril George; sisters, Marion George and Rosie Schnieders.
