Merlyn Wayne Sorensen Obituary
Merlyn Wayne Sorensen

Merlyn Wayne Sorensen passed away peacefully at home on November 13, 2013, with his family at his side. Merlyn was born to Soren and Isabelle (Petersen) Sorensen on March 3, 1927, in rural Clay County. He grew up and attended school in the Viborg area. He joined the Merchant Marines in October of 1944, serving in the Pacific Theatre. He was honorably discharged in August 1946, and returned to the Lennox area where he met and married Gladys Ramse on October 16, 1947.

Merlyn worked for John Morrell & Co. Rural Electric in the Worthing area, until moving to a farm at Willow Lake and later back to the Lennox and Vermillion area. On September 1, 1958, he joined the Sioux Falls Police Department. Merlyn worked in the traffic bureau, the detective bureau and the identification bureau, advancing until being appointed to the Chief of Police position in May of 1974. He retired from that position on September 1, 1982.

Merlyn's love of fishing and hunting led he and Gladys to move to Pierre, SD, so he could pursue those interests more easily. While in Pierre, he worked for the Department of Game, Fish and Parks as a part time conservation officer. He also worked for the Federal Court System as a security officer. Merlyn and Gladys moved back to Sioux Falls in 1994, to be closer to their family. Merlyn loved fishing and hunting, and after moving back to Sioux Falls starting collecting old fishing lures and equipment, which he bought and sold worldwide. Merlyn was a lifetime member of the Fraternal Order of Police.
