Michael David Maddox Obituary
Michael David Maddox

Michael David Maddox passed away on June 14, 2017 at his home in Burlington, Vermont.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 19th at 10:00 a.m. at Hope Lutheran Church, at 1700 S Cliff Ave, Sioux Falls, SD. Family and friends will share their memories of Mike as we celebrate his life

Mike was trained in classical French cuisine at the New England Culinary Institute (NECI) where he received his Associate of Arts/Culinary Arts degree in 1996. His favorite style of cooking was in Asian cuisine, especially Thai and Japanese, but he could make a gourmet dinner from almost anything. Over the years he was a chef at a variety of Burlington VT area restaurants serving classical French as well as Asian cuisine. During his training at NECI he did an externship at the America Club in Kohler, Wisconsin. He also worked as guest chef for two summers at the Manor on Golden Pond in Holderness, NH and at the North Hero House in North Hero, VT.

Mike was born in Iowa City, Iowa on December 1, 1969. The family moved to San Francisco in 1972 and from an early age Mike developed a taste for Asian cooking as his parents took their children to Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Japanese, and Indian restaurants. In 1980 they moved to Burlington, VT and Mike remained there for the next 37 years. He was joined in matrimony to wife P'noi Charoenrot, June 10, 2001. Sadly, over the years he developed an addiction to alcohol. In February 2011, he came to Sioux Falls and went to Tallgrass Recovery, then stayed with his parents the rest of the year while his mother, Kathy Maddox, was on in-home hospice. That year was one of sobriety and happiness for Mike. He returned to Vermont, then came back to Sioux Falls in February 2012 following the death of his mother. After returning to Vermont he resumed his career as a master chef but eventually the disease of alcoholism took his life.

He is survived by his wife P'noi; of Burlington, VT; his father, David Maddox of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; his sister, Susan Maddox and her husband Rod Harms of Chancellor, South Dakota; his niece, Jane Harms of Sioux Falls; many aunts, uncles, and cousins; and his wonderful friends, too numerous to name, that he made in Vermont.

In lieu of flowers the family would like that donations made in Michael's memory be directed to Tallgrass Recovery (27048 S Tallgrass Ave, Sioux Falls, SD 57108), to Hope Lutheran Church (1700 S Cliff Ave, Sioux Falls, SD 57105) or to the Susan G.Kommen , South Dakota (like his Grandpa Maddox, Mike was a breast cancer survivor).
