She attended grammar school at the Grand Meadow School - District 91 (a one-room school) and graduated from Hartford High School in 1944.

She attended Sioux Valley Hospital School of Nursing in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She graduated from the three year course as a Registered Nurse. She moved to California after graduation to live with her sister Jarda and worked at California Lutheran Hospital. She also worked on a Bachelor in nursing degree at UCLA. She returned to South Dakota a year later and worked at the Brookings Hospital while continuing her education at South Dakota State College (University). While there, she met Truman "Tim" Maursetter. Nila began collecting stuffed rabbits and teddy bears after she was given a stuffed rabbit at her retirement party. Her collection grew to the point where rabbits, bears and Mickey Mouse would peak out from any open shelf or chair.
