Sioux Falls - Richard "Dick" Avery, 81, passed away Sunday, November 27, 2016 at Sanford USD Medical Center.

Family will be present for a memorial visitation 5:00 - 7:00 PM Thursday, December 1 at Miller Southside Funeral Chapel, 7400 S. Minnesota Ave, Sioux Falls, SD, with a Masonic Service starting at 7:00 PM.

Richard "Dick" Smith Avery was born on March 22, 1935 to Harold and Mildred (Smith) Avery in DeKalb, Illinois. Richard served two years in the United States Army. He graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor's degree in Agronomy.

Dick was united in marriage with his pen pal of two years, Joanne Miller on August 18, 1956 in Hawkeye, Iowa.

Dick retired from FMC, Chemical Division in 1994. He was a member of Social Lodge 48, Northfield, MN, and was a member of the lodge for 45 years. Richard was also a member of El Riad Shrine and a past commander of Legion of Honor.

Dick is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joanne, Sioux Falls, SD; children, Christopher (Marsha) Avery, Sioux Falls, SD, Karen (Doug) Jones, Rapid City, SD, Kennon (Denise) Avery, Kennewick, WA, Richard (Linda) Avery, Osage, KS; grandchildren, Jason (Stacy) Avery, Jennifer (Dan) Wolfe, Kara (Ross) Wickman, Phillip Avery, Dana Jones, Dillon Jones, Anthony (Bethany) Avery, Allen Avery, Andrew Avery, Josh Adams, Rob (Madison) Weicht, Samantha Avery; great grandchildren, Marlee & Ryan Avery, Christian & Greta Wolfe, Asher Wickman, Patton Weicht; nephews, Phillip Jennings, Steven Jennings and niece, Lori Jennings.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step father, Lester Cook; sister, Shirley Jennings and brother-in-law, Kenneth Jennings. Online guestbook available at
