Richard F. Miller Obituary
Richard F. Miller

Richard F. Miller, 63, of Sioux Falls, completed his earthly journey peacefully on December 25, 2016 with his wife and daughter by his side at home. Richard was born February 13, 1953 to Howard and Joyce (Galbraith) Miller at Marshall, MN. His family moved from Minnesota to Sioux Falls during his junior high school years.

Richard graduated from Lincoln High in Sioux Falls in 1971. After high school, he completed camera repair school in Denver, returning to Sioux Falls to form his own camera repair business. He later worked in retail hardware, for Gateway in Sioux Falls, and 15 years at Citibank, lastly in information security. There he completed training to become A+ Certified and a Microsoft Certified Professional. Richard retired from Citibank in 2014.

Richard learned to play bass and acoustic guitar in his teens and was a member of a band called Tides of Time during the late 60's. Richard became friends with his future wife's older brother, Jim Carlson, a fellow musician, during high school, and they played music together in another band. He would later meet Michelle again in 1990 and they were married on November 5, 1994. Richard gained a wife and son, Colin, upon marriage to Michelle and stepped into instant fatherhood, a role he cherished. Their daughter, Rachel, was born in 1995, making him the proudest dad ever. Richard assisted in coaching Rachel and her softball team for four seasons. In 2010, Richard was best man at his son's wedding, an honor he readily accepted. Richard liked to travel and they took vacations to many other states. The couple also traveled twice to England and France.

Richard was a man of many talents. Later in life, he loved composing songs for the acoustic guitar. On occasion, he would "jam" with musician friends. Hobbies included building guitars, creating wooden clocks and other woodwork, home remodeling, and photography. He had a technical ability to build and repair computers and to fix almost anything. He enjoyed golfing, camping, hunting and fishing, once catching a prize walleye. He also loved activities with his grandson, Landon, who called him "Pop Pop". Most of all, he loved time with family and made countless friends in his life. He faced any and all challenges with immeasurable strength, and although we miss him, his kindness and selfless spirit is remembered and lives in our hearts.

Grateful for having shared his life are the love of his life, Michelle, daughter Rachel Miller and grandson Landon, Sioux Falls, son Colin (Deesha) Dyvig, Henderson, NV, sisters-in-law Marcia Rehn, Superior, CO, Maureen Carlson, Minneapolis, MN, brother-in-law James Carlson, Sioux Falls, and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Joyce Miller.

A memorial is planned for January 21, 2017 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main Avenue, Sioux Falls. Interment will be at a later date at Hills of Rest Cemetery
