Richard Hanson

Richard Arent Hanson was the 6th of 7 siblings born into the family on August 6, 1936. He grew up on the Hanson family farm just West of Dell Rapids, South Dakota. After 2 years serving in the Navy on the USS Lake Champlain, he returned home and met Celestine (Sally) Bruening at the Arkota Ballroom. They married October 3rd 1959 and raised 5 children during their 50 year marriage. Richard spent most of his career working as a stationary engineer at John Morrell for 34 years but retired in the engine room at the VA Medical Center in 2000.

He passed away on July 16 after a brief illness with his family surrounding him. Richard is survived by his five children: David of Sioux Falls; Denise (Jeff) of Brooklyn Park, MN; Deidra of (Brookings); Dan (Debbie) of Mercer Island; WA and Doreen of Thousand Oaks, CA; his sisters Esther (Charles) Nelson and Dolores (Harold) Simpkins both of Sioux Falls; his brothers-in-law Richard Mesch of Sioux Falls and Lou Hans of Wynot, NE as well as Don Bruening of Omaha and his sister in-law Ruby Hanson of Dell Rapids.

Richard was also a proud grandfather to 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild (Ashley, Lindsey, Elise, James, Carr, Matthew, Nicolas, Leah, Jon, Jenna, Kate, Connor and McKenzie) who frequented their acreage while growing up. He took great pride in enjoying the land alongside them and sharing his love for his garden.
