Robert Sunderman, 68, passed away February 15, 2017 at Sanford Select Specialty Hospital.

Robert Lee Sunderman, son of Glenn and Kathryn (Gross) Sunderman was born May 19, 1948 in Sioux Falls, SD. He grew up in Sioux Falls, SD and graduated from Washington High School in 1967. Robert entered the United States Marines on October 4, 1967 in Omaha, Nebraska. His awards and accommodations include multiple Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, National Defense Metal, Vietnam Service Metal, and Vietnam Campaign Metal. Robert was honorably discharged at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina September 21, 1970 he held the rank of Sergeant. He graduated from Augustana College in 1974.

Robert worked several jobs prior to starting his career with the United States Postal Service. He worked there for 33 years until his retirement as a register clerk. Robert loved any type of dirt oval track racing. He was a loyal Huset's fan and was into ice racing in the 1970's then enduro racing in the 1980's.

Robert was united in marriage with Marcia Georgeson on May 11, 1996 at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Sioux Falls, SD. The couple made their home in Sioux Falls, SD where Robert was a member at St. Therese Catholic Church, VFW, DAV, American Legion, Moose Lodge and Golf 2-7 Vietnam Veterans Association.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Marcia; two sisters, Beverly Barrow, Jena Sunderman; nieces and nephews, Gene (Shannon) Barrow, Andrea Barrow, Jenell (Joe) Dukovac, Cindy Phelps, Bill (Kim) Phelps; many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews on both sides of the family; sister and brother-in-laws; Carolyn and Richard Cink, Donna and John Merrick, Joe Georgeson and Karon Wilson, and Linda Georgeson.

Robert was preceded in death by a sister, Loretta Phelps; his parents, Glenn and Kathryn Sunderman; mother and father-in-law Russell and Ardell Georgeson; and several special aunts and uncles.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 am Thursday, February 23, 2017 at St. Therese Catholic Church. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00pm Wednesday, February 22, 2017 with a liturgical wake service at 7:00pm at Heritage Funeral Home.
