Following high school, Rodney started working for John Morrell's in Sioux Falls. After holding various positions with them over 41 years, he retired from the company in 2001.

Rodney was united in marriage with LaVonne Rockman in 1962. He later married Ardys Larson on February 16, 1985.

Rodney was an avid gardener throughout his life, taking pride in growing produce in his vegetable garden and producing beautiful flowers in and around the house. Maintenance of his house, yard and vehicles were a priority. He enjoyed mowing, raking and shoveling his own and his neighbors' property along with washing, cleaning and waxing his vehicles and those of his family. These activities were labors of love for Rodney. Wood was another interest for Rodney. As a wood craftsman he created projects in his shop for family and friends and as a woodsman, he enjoyed spending time in the woods cutting and splitting firewood. Rodney was an athlete in his younger years and transitioned into an avid fan of family sporting events with basketball and football being two of his favorites.
