Sara Ries

Sara Fensel Ries was born on January 30, 1938 to Emma (Miller) and Wilmer Fensel in Freeman, South Dakota. She departed this life on October 18, 2016 and joined her heavenly Father.

Memorial Services will be held on Monday, Oct. 24th at 10:30 am at the Bethany Mennonite Church in Freeman. Visitation and viewing will be from 5-7 pm Sunday, Oct. 23rd at the Walter Funeral Home in Freeman.

While growing up, Sara helped her parents in their hatchery business and their electrical wholesale business. She was a hard worker and was always willing to help where there was a need.

Sara attended Freeman Elementary School through eighth grade and then attended the Freeman Academy, graduating in 1955. Her career began when she moved to Yankton, SD where she managed the Fensel Motel. In 1956, Sara married Alan Ries and they were blessed with two children, Ken and Lori. The family moved to Yorba Linda, California in 1969 where Sara enjoyed working in a Flower Shop and was also a Real Estate agent. She made many life long friends while living in Yorba Linda.

Sara and Alan returned to Freeman in 1999. She rejoined the Bethany Mennonite Church where she had been baptized on October 5, 1952, and continued to be a faithful member. She served on several committees and helped regularly at the Bethany Food Pantry. Sara was also an active member of the Freeman Lions Club and served in many capacities for 15 years.

She worked as a cook at the Freeman Regional Health Services for several years. Following this, she was employed at the Fensel Motel and Greenhouse until her passing.

Sara loved the great outdoors and spent many hours in her backyard gardening, planting flowers, and feeding the birds, squirrels and rabbits. She loved animals and cherished her numerous dogs as well as the many cats she adopted through the years. Her cats, Sophie and Tigger were very special to her and they became like children to her.

Sara was a generous, loving wife, mother, sister and friend. Her presence will be missed immensely by her husband, Alan; son, Ken (Toni); grandsons, Tyler and Bradley; sister, JoAnn (Lefty) Ries; sister, Lorna (Terry) Prunty; son-in-law, Keith Candee; several nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Emma and Wilmer Fensel; daughter, Lori Candee; and niece, Karen (Ries) Cressman.
