Sioux Falls - Virgil E. Vail age 92 of Sioux Falls, passed away Friday August 10, 2018 at Dougherty Hospice House.

Family will greet friends from 5:00-7:00 pm Monday at Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main Ave. Funeral services will be 11:00 am Tuesday August 14, at First Lutheran Church, with burial at Woodlawn Cemetery.

Virgil Eugene Vail was born on October 15, 1925 to Harry and Alice (Rollings) Vail in Britton, SD. He married Carolyn (Julson) on June 2, 1950. They were blessed with 58 years together and 3 children, 7 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. Virgil graduated from Washington High School in Sioux Falls, SD in 1944. He served in the Navy from April, 1944 to June, 1946 as a radioman spending over a year on Midway Island.

After the war he returned to South Dakota and enrolled at the University of South Dakota where he earned a Doctor of Law degree in 1950. He was employed for 5 years in the insurance business as a Vice President and Manager of the claims department. In 1955 he opened a law office with continued involvement with insurance claims and also as manager of Atlas Life Insurance Company.

In 1973 Virgil was appointed an Administrative Law Judge with the United States Government. He served in Fargo, ND, Salt Lake City, UT, Denver, CO and Sioux Falls, SD. In January, 2003 he retired to care for his wife, Carolyn, who had suffered a stroke.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Virgil was a life member of the Sioux Falls Elks Club, South Dakota Bar Association (over 50+ years), First Lutheran Church, Westward Ho Country Club, and several special and honorary fraternities including Delta Tau Delta and Delta Theta Phi (law).

Virgil is survived by his daughters: Diane Adams (Tony), Janice Meyer (Dan), and Kristi Weisbecker (Tom); grandchildren Jennifer (Adams) Tyson, Kati (Adams) and Dustin Tignor, Troy and Stephanie Meyer, Gary and Kristina Meyer, Ann (Weisbecker) and Guy Fiorita, Lisa (Weisbecker) and Ammon Snyder, and John and Jessica Weisbecker; and great-grandchildren Tagger and Taryn Tyson, Connor and Colbi Tignor, Jamison and William Meyer, Emma Meyer, Gus Fiorita, James and June Weisbecker, and Lily Snyder.

He was preceded in death by his wife Carolyn, his parents, and a step brother, Steve Vail. www.millerfh.com
