William P. (Bill, "Doc") Nelson, 88, Elkton, SD, died peacefully surrounded by family on April 18, 2016 at Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home in Viborg, SD. Bill was born on February 7, 1928 in De Smet, SD to Clarence and Nelle (Coughlin) Nelson. His parents, along with his younger brother, Robert, moved to Pipestone, MN in 1934. There he attended grade school and high school, graduating in 1946. After witnessing the relief a local chiropractor provided his Mother, Bill entered Palmer Chiropractic College and attended from 1947 - 1949, transferring to Northwestern Chiropractic College and receiving his Doctorate of Chiropractic in 1951. He was drafted and entered the Army in 1951 and was discharged in 1953. Bill married Bernice Froning October 9, 1954 in Pipestone, MN and together they raised 6 children, instilling them with strong faith, work ethic and dedication to family and their community. He began his private Chiropractic practice in Gettysburg, SD. After 2 years he moved his practice to Elkton, SD, committed to providing health and healing through chiropractic care for the entire area surrounding Elkton. Doc was always studying new chiropractic concepts and worked side-by-side with his wife, Bernie, who was his office assistant for 30 years. In 1992, he was awarded the Golden Service Award for the longest standing active license in South Dakota. Doc, never missing a day of work, retired in 1996 after 40 years. Bill was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church. Doc was a vibrant and active civic leader in Elkton, serving as the Mayor and City Councilman, President of the Elkton Community Club, Past Grand Knight of the local Knights of Columbus Council, past commander of the American Legion Post and many other community organizations. In 2011, Bill and Bernie moved from Elkton to Sioux Falls where they enjoyed living at The Inn on Westport Assisted Living where Bill resided until further medical care was necessary and moved to Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home, Viborg. SD. Bernie continues to reside at The Inn on Westport. Bill is survived by his wonderful wife, Bernie, celebrating 61 years of marriage in October 2015, his children, Kevin (Lori) Nelson, Billings, MT, Karen (Bill) Goon, Eden Prairie, MN, Mary (Jim) Nielsen, Wakonda, SD, Steve (Karen) Nelson, Elkton, SD, Lori (Tom) Eggers, Sioux Falls, SD, Cathy (Craig) Johnson, Medford, OR; 21 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; 4 sisters-in-law, many nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Robert and a nephew, Jeff. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 23, 2016 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Elkton with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the church. www.skrochfc.com
