William "Bill" Schartz

William "Bill" Schartz, 83, of rural Harrisburg, died Monday, September 21, 2015 at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls.

William Schartz was born April 1, 1932 at Hartford, South Dakota. He moved with his family to Sioux Falls where he received his education. At age 15, he entered military service and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict from 1948 until receiving his honorable discharge in 1951.

Upon his return from the military, Bill worked for a short time at Beatrice Foods. He began his career with Modern Press in 1955 in the production department. He left that position in 1984 after 29 years of service. Bill worked for The Printing Center in Sioux Falls in the bindery area until his retirement.

On August 4, 1957, he married Patricia Stanton in Sioux Falls. She preceded him in death on October 11, 1962. On December 31, 1965, he was united in marriage with Beverly Schmidt at Las Vegas, NV.

For hobbies, Bill enjoyed bowling, hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Cathedral of St. Joseph, was a life member of the Hartford American Legion Post #118 and also a life member of the V.F.W. Post #628 of Sioux Falls.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Beverly of rural Harrisburg; one son, James (Barbara) Schartz of Sioux Falls, SD; one granddaughter, Rebecca Sherrill; a great grandson, Spencer; and one brother, Harold (Kathleen) Schartz of Santa Marie, CA. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Arlene Lee and Loretta Schartz.

A Mass of the Resurrection will begin 10:00 am Thursday, September 24th at the Cathedral of St. Joseph. Interment will be in St. Michael Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be from 5:00-7:00 pm Wednesday at Miller Funeral Home, Main Avenue location.
