Marian A. Henjum

Marian Henjum, 69, of Sioux Falls, died on Wednesday, September 24, 2014, at her home. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 PM Tuesday, September 30, 2014, at Zion Lutheran Church, Garretson. Visitation will begin at 4:00 PM Monday, with the family present from 6-8:00 PM, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson.

Marian was born on February 28, 1945, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Fred & Martha (Sorum) Henjum. She was baptized on April 22, 1945 and graduated from Garretson High School in 1963. Marian then graduated from South Dakota State University with an Art Education degree. She is listed in Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities and Outstanding Young Women of America. Upon graduation she was asked to teach at her alma mater. After three years as an SDSU instructor, she moved to Sioux Falls in 1971.

Marian started exhibiting, selling her work and winning awards in the 1960's. She has had over 40 solo shows, and her paintings are in public and private collections internationally, including numerous permanent collections. Marian's work was purchased for the South Dakota Capitol's permanent collection.

Marian earned Signature Membership in the Transparent Watercolor Society of America in 1983. The TWSA has also honored her with the Zoltan Szabo National Award. The SD Arts Council has granted her three Artist Project Grants. Sioux Falls voted Marian as their Favorite Artist and also chose her for the Mayor's Award of Excellence in Visual Arts. She has won over 30 Addy Awards for illustration and design from the SD Advertising Federation. The US Postal Service selected Marian to design the 1989 SD Centennial Stamp. 160 million stamps were printed and distributed worldwide. June 30, 1989, was declared MARIAN HENJUM DAY by SD Governor George S. Mickelson. Her work frequently appeared in area publications, and her paintings have been featured on four South Dakota Magazine covers. Marian worked hard out of her home studio, where she also taught watercolor and drawing classes.

Grateful for having shared her life are her brothers, Bill Henjum, Garretson, and Jim (Karen) Henjum, Harrisburg; nephews: Ron (DeeAnn) Henjum, Harrisburg, and their children: Tanner, Maizy, Riley, and twins Kale and Kendall; and John (friend Kiley Davis) Henjum and daughter Khloe; and a niece, Sheila (Joe) Schleisman, and their children: Megan, Jacob, Jesse James, and Andrew. So sad to hear of the loss of Marian Henjum. I took a drawing class from her in the spring of this year and found her to be a delightfully funny, kind and creative woman. My condolences on her passing. She will be missed.

I was so saddened to read of Marian's passing. I first met her a number of years ago at an outdoor art festival at Falls Park. I immediately loved her work, but especially noticed a small sign that read "instruction available." Over the years I took about 4 classes with her.
Marian was kind, encouraging, non-judgemental and excited about teaching.
My time with her was fun and has enabled me to continue to "dabble" and enjoy drawing and painting for my own pleasure.
Marian has contributed so much to our community. I am happy to have had the good fortune to know her and be one of her students.

I have a heavy heart that we have all lost such a dear sole. I had the privilege of working with Marian at the Argus Leader and have never ceased to be amazed at her talent. She was a wonderful person who never had an unkind word and was always willing to share and enhance the lives of those around her. I will truly miss my dear friend. I know she will continue to make our heaven's glow with the wonderful colors of her paintings and her soul.

Marian was a woman of kindness, generosity and talent. I was fortunate to have been a summer art student in the old Red Owl store in Garretson in 1964. The average age in the class was well over 60, but we
six students benefitted from the
atmosphere Marian brought to us. I
shall always remember this time.Thank you Marian, you left a mark on our hearts and the world better for having known you.

I was sad to hear this- she was my coffee shop friend, we sat next to each other both looking at the newspaper decided to share the news paper and not fight over it. She was always a delight to share stories with - when i saw her golden toyota van i knew it would be an interesting visit.

Marion was one of the finest people I've ever met. Her smile and laughter lit up a room. . .especially at her art show openings. Her talent will live on with her contributions to public and personal art collections.

The telehone call that brought the news Marian had passed away left me surprised and very much saddened.

I first met Marian at the Civc Fine Arts Center in Sioux Falls in the late seventies and early eighties. To say she was a delight to know is an understatement. She was a pleasure to work with and a true credit to the arts. I am very fortunate to have in my home, even after countless moves from Sioux Falls, two of her works. One is hanging in my den and the other in my study.

Everyone, including myself, was privileged to have known her and call her our friend. The world of art suffered a great loss with her passing.
