James Reynolds Obituary

Dr. James Reynolds

Sioux Falls - On Thursday, November 12, 2020, Dr. James R. Reynolds bid a final farewell to his loved ones as he was called to heaven and is now reunited with God, family, friends and former colleagues and patients. While Jim's work here is done, his love and legacy will continue to serve the community for generations to come.

James Reynolds married his high school sweetheart, Debby Darroch, in August of 1964. Together they lived, laughed, loved, surprised and spoiled each other silly. For 56 years, the strength of their bond shone through in all of their many, many endeavors.

A lifelong resident of South Dakota and graduate of Augustana College, Jim began his medical education at the University of South Dakota School of Medicine where he graduated first in his class. As the USD Medical School was only a two-year program at that time, he transferred to The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (class of 1969) for the final two years of medical school education. After completing medical school, he remained at Johns Hopkins for his residencies in general, thoracic, and cardiovascular surgery. Dr. Reynolds had an opportunity to remain at Johns Hopkins with an offer of a career in academic medicine, but his mission was always to bring his education home to where he began his medical career in South Dakota in 1975.

Jim was a pioneer in bringing cardiovascular surgery to the state of South Dakota. His leadership was instrumental in the founding of North Central Heart in 1981. In 2001, Dr. Reynolds was a significant influence in the establishment of the Avera Heart Hospital of South Dakota which quickly became ranked among the very best heart centers in the country. As a true visionary in the advancement of medicine, Dr. James Reynolds was inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame in 2006.

Dr. Reynolds served on numerous boards including the Avera Health Board, Sioux Valley Hospital Board, DakotaCare, and the South Dakota State Board of Medical and Osteopathic Examiners. He is a past President of the American College of Surgeons, South Dakota State Medical Association, and North Central Heart Institute, and continued to serve on the South Dakota Health Care Commission for many years.

During all of those very busy years, Jim and Debby also raised a large and happy family including Dr. Branden Reynolds (Catherine), Amy Reynolds Minchin (James), Bethany Reynolds McKenzie (Matt), Timothy James Reynolds (Amanda), AnnMarie Reynolds Kreuger (Nathan) and countless dogs! He was also the proud grandfather of 12 wonderful grandchildren who fiercely adored him.

Jim spent his days in the operating room and his evenings at the farm. He could go from a business suit to wrangler jeans faster than you can say, "John Deere!" His hobby farm brought him great joy throughout the years and was the perfect getaway for countless family gatherings, opportunities to learn from neighboring farmers and car rides to check on the mile-long shelterbelt he and the family planted by hand. Never one to thrive on idle time, Jim was even more than a father, a surgeon and a farmer. He was a hunter, a fisherman, a collector, a sailor, a world-traveler, a Nascar fan, a dog lover, a dedicated philanthropist, a mentor, a life-long learner, a prankster, the BEST joke-teller, a consummate host, and the greatest friend-maker. Jim's love for people was so genuine and insatiable. When encountering a stranger, he would commonly ask, "So where is home for you?" And so, yet another new friendship began.

Above all else, Jim was the most humble and gracious gentleman; never one to put himself above anyone else. He would likely frown upon our touting of his accomplishments and accolades, but we (his children) are proud of him and everything he embodied.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Rose Reynolds and his brothers, Roger and Charles (Chub) Reynolds. And while we celebrate their reunion, Jim will be so dearly missed by his wife, Debby, and their 5 children, spouses, grandchildren, and his beloved hunting dog, Chloe.

We choose to honor his lifelong commitment to health by respecting the current public health conditions. We are forgoing an in-person visitation and public celebration of life ceremony and instead hosting a live-streamed funeral service on Tuesday, November 17th and 2:00 PM CST. A link to the service will be posted on his tribute page at millerfh.com. We would be so honored to read about your personal connections and memories of our father by writing a comment on his virtual guestbook, also found on his tribute page.

It gives us great peace to know that his life of steadfast faith has led him home to the loving arms of his Heavenly Father.

My heart and prayers go out to Amy and the entire Reynolds family. Every memory I have of Dr. Reynolds was filled with his wonderful demeanor. No matter what me and Amy were up to in the 80's, he was always kind and patient. He loved his family deeply and was truly present in each moment he was in.

Dr. Reynolds performed an operation on my wife's heart 31 years ago which has allowed us all these wonderful years together for which we are forever grateful and thankful for his brilliant medical powers. He was a wonderful person and I was also lucky to have him for a parent of Branden who played baseball for me in Bantam Baseball. He was a fine example of what a "little league" parent should be. Rest in peace Dr.

Jim Reynolds was a class act in so many different way. I had the honor to work with Jim on various boards in our city, and to share time together at various Ducks Unlimited events. The citizens of our city and state are better off because of the work and dedication of Dr. Jim Reynolds.

I started working at McKennan in the OR in 1980 and became part of the ❤ team when the program started. So many fond memories of both elective and emergent cases with Dr Reynolds. I always appreciated his calm demeanor and professionalism. He always put his patient first and treated the OR staff with respect. Dr Reynolds saved my fathers life which made him even more special to me. After his retirement whenever I would see him he always gave me a hug and asked how my family was doing. Well deserving respected man. While I know he is at peace he will be missed by all who knew him.

Was sad to see this. He was an amazing cardiac surgeon/physician. Enjoyed my interactions with him during my career in Radiology at Mckennan. He was also a very humble and Christian man. I will always have this memory of him from some 40 yrs ago: Our church (1st Presbyterian) offered a "Medical Ethics" class and he and his wife were in it. At the start of the 1st class, we went around the room introducing ourselves. When it came to him, this is what he said " My claim to fame is I am married to Debbie Reynolds". How sweet was that!! Whenever I saw him and now when I remember him, that is what puts a smile in my heart.

I worked with Dr. Reynolds at Sioux Valley Hospital in 1987 when I first started in critical care and will never forget his encouragement to be on “the heart team”. Always a humble man who would look you in the eye and embrace everyone’s combined skills to care for his patients! A loss, to me, when he left to go his greater venture-but was blessed to see him at Menards, or wherever, and was greeted with kindness and questions about family, dogs and home. Prayers to his family and friends on this tremendous loss. He will Rest In Peace for so many jobs “well-done” and will be welcomed HOME Warm memories to a great man I was blessed to know, work with, learn from and listen to stories of what made him happiest!

Smart, kind, energetic, family man, leader, fun loving, dedicated and caring are a few words that come to mind when thinking about Jim. Rick and I were thrilled when Jim and Debby agreed to sail with us and other dear friends in the Caribbean. It was a great trip filled with laughter, adventure and discussions about Statins (to the chagrin of the non-medical folks on the boat)! I can just see Jim and Rick picking up their friendship in some spiritual way, figuring out a way to deal with the pandemic and cheering on their tired colleagues.
Rest in peace dear friend. You were loved by many.

Words can hardly describe the admiration I had for Dr. Reynolds. He treated me, as a student and intern, with dignity and respect. His surgical skills, knowledge and compassion saved my grandfather’s life twice. Every physician could learn from his humility and bedside manner. He had a big heart and fixed so many.

I first worked with Dr. Reynolds in1984. He was always a gentleman and a friend of Nursing. Was fortunate enough to work with him at the Heart Hospital, which he helped found. Last time I saw him, he addressed me by my first name. That ment a lot to me.
Will miss you JR.

I am so honored and so thankful for knowing such an amazing man! I worked side by side with JR in the OR as a CST for 8 years! He has taught me everything I know! I recently went back to school to get my RN and he was so proud of me! I made sure I called every year on his bday just to catch up! I referred to JR as my “dad” of the Operating room! My heart is completely broken but glad that he is at peace! God bless you and your family!! Hugs to all! God bless! Xoxoxoxo
