Norman Parmer Obituary
DAYTON - Dr. Jess Norman Parmer passed away on the afternoon of Jan. 26, 2016, at the Dayton, Ohio VA Medical Center surrounded by his family. He was 90 years old.
Norman was born in Elkhart, Indiana on Nov. 23, 1925, the only child of Jess Noah Parmer and Zayda Irene Tressler.
Norman served in the Army as a foot soldier and fought in the Battle of the Bulge when he was 19. He married his high school sweetheart Bessie Norma Peterson on Sept. 12, 1948. He studied history in college and went on to earn his PhD from Cornell University and followed his passion for International Studies. He was the first Peace Corps Director in Malaysia, he was an Associate Dean at Ohio University and served as Vice President for Academic Affairs at Trinity University in San Antonio. Dr. Parmer loved teaching, reading, traveling and writing. He worked with graduate students well into his 80s and in recent years wrote his memoir of WWII. He was a great storyteller and a kind man who will be missed by many.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law- Sarah and Tom Pecor; a son and daughter-in-law- Tom and Elizabeth Parmer; six grandchildren- Keith Kivi, Courtney Parmer and Christine Parmer, Ryan Pecor, Jaime Pecor and Emily Pecor; and two great-grandchildren Hannah and Lindsay Kivi.
The family will have a graveside service and interment 2 p.m., Saturday at Rice Cemetery in Elkhart, Indiana. A memorial service will be held Feb. 13 at 11 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church Athens, Ohio conducted by Rev. Lynn Miller.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Lutheran Church, Athens, Ohio.
