Dorothy Hamburger Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

HAMBURGER, Dorothy DOROTHY P. HAMBURGER Dorothy P. Hamburger, 93, passed away peacefully February 9 at her home in Atlanta. She was the eldest of four children of Kate and Charles Pearl of Greensboro, NC. A 1939 graduate of Syracuse University, she was a gracious Southern Lady who embraced a larger world during an earlier era. She was adventurous and gregarious and pursued life with an infectious exuberance. She moved to Baltimore, MD after college graduation, where she was a caseworker for the Department of Welfare. It was in Baltimore that she met her husband-to-be, Alvin Hamburger. They were married in September 1940 . . . and enjoyed life together for 55 years until his death in 1995. Known as "Dot" to her many friends, she was a 60-year resident of Atlanta, where she and Al worked together on behalf of numerous civic, philanthropic and religious organizations. She was especially active in support of local and regional Jewish organizations. She served for more than 50 years as a founder, officer, board member, historian, and always a devoted cheerleader for URJ Camp Coleman in Cleveland, Georgia. She served as president of The Temple Sisterhood in 1960-'62 and 1974-'76, and served on numerous Temple committees over the years. She was an early member of the Southern Jewish Historical Society and shared a keen interest in genealogy. Dorothy and Alvin raised two sons, G. Marc Hamburger and S. Alan Hamburger (deceased 2004). She was a proud Mother, Grandmother and recently, a Great Grandmother, always stressing to her progeny the values of educational accomplishment and hard work. A highlight of the past several months have been frequent visits with great granddaughter Evelyn. The baby added a new sparkle to Dorothy's life. They connected from the very beginning. Dorothy had a fun-loving attitude and an engaging sense of humor . . . with moments of disarming candor and mischievous irreverence. She joked that her parents would have smiled approvingly when she was voted the "Least Changed Graduate" at her 50th college reunion. In addition to her husband, Alvin Hamburger, and her son, Alan Hamburger, she is pre-deceased by her parents, Kate and Charles Pearl, sister, Betty Pearl Simon, and her brother, Sigmund Selig Pearl, US Army, who was killed in action during World War II. Dorothy is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Marc and Deedee Hamburger, grandchildren Robert J. Hamburger and Katherine Hamburger Schneider, and great granddaughter Evelyn Sarah Schneider, their spouses, Tanya Johnson and Hal Schneider, all of Atlanta, and by her sister, Rita Pearl Lichtenstein and her husband, Jack Lichtenstein, of New York City, by her brother-in-law, Dr. J. Richard Simon, of Iowa City, Iowa, and by nieces, nephews and their families in New York and Chicago. Special thanks to caregivers Marlene Edwards, Shelly Kidd, Nancy Ruff and Jeneva Jones whose loving assistance will always be cherished. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any contributions in Dorothy's memory may be directed to the Hamburger Family Welcome Center at URJ Camp Coleman, 1580 Spalding Drive, Atlanta, GA 30350, or to The Temple, 1589 Peachtree Street, Atlanta, GA 30309, or to the charity of your choice. A service will be held at The Temple on Sunday, February 12, 2012 at 2:30 PM, followed by a graveside service on Monday at the family burial site in Greensboro, NC. Dear Marc,
Sorry to learn of your mother's passing. I was also sorry to learn of Alan's death. I had not been in touch with him since high school but I have many fond memories of our time making music in the bluegrass band. Alan was a gifted person with a huge love for people. Please accept my sympathies for the loss of both of these exceptional people.
