GOLD, MD, Robert Stanley Robert Stanley Gold, MD of Atlanta, GA passed away on May 11, 2016 at the age of 74. Dr. Gold was born on April 14, 1942 in Philadelphia, PA. He is survived by his wife Valerie and his children Michael, Jonathan and Samantha. Also surviving are his grandchildren Aidan, Audrey and Peter and his sister Carolyn De Jonge. Robert (a.k.a. Rob, Bob, Rob/Bob or Ron) was married for 43 years to the late Judith Kosmahl Gold. Dr. Gold was certainly a gentleman and a scholar. He received his Medical Doctorate from Hahnemann Medical College in 1966. He practiced general surgery in the U.S. Navy for 21 years. After leaving the service, he worked as a consultant in the fields of managed care medicine, locum tenens, home health, hospital accreditation and licensure. He later co-founded DCBA, Inc., a consulting firm which provided education to hospital medical staff throughout the United States on the topic of Clinical Documentation Improvement. His clinical acumen, knowledge of medical coding and billing, and easy, engaging manner allowed him to bridge the gap between healthcare delivery and the business of medicine. And he did it with his own unique, caring, personal, and inimitable style. He had an innate, intuitive sense as to the essence of people's medical, intellectual and emotional needs. This combined with his intellect, extraordinary intelligence and experience made him a truly brilliant man. He had a passion for teaching, whether it be educating someone about a disease process, how to play banjo or teaching them the proper bowling technique. Dr Gold's unabashed sense of humor was pervasive in all of aspects of his life. He derived great joy out of making others smile. Robert never did anything half-hearted. He became an expert at anything he took an interest in, and his interests were many; he was a gourmet chef, a musician, a builder, a landscape architect, an avid baseball card collector and a diehard Atlanta Braves fan. Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service at H.M. Patterson & Son-Oglethorpe Hill Chapel, 4550 Peachtree Rd, NE, Brookhaven, GA 30319 on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at 3pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Winship Cancer Foundation at Emory or planting trees in Israel in his memory are fitting honors.

You would be so proud of your grandson who was inducted into the Junior Beta Club. I miss you more and more each day. When I'm at work and I need advice on documentation, I miss being able to call you and go off on a tangent of random Monty Python quotes after getting the help I needed. Every day I try to do you proud with all that you have taught me both in life and professionally. I am so happy to have started working for you and traveling with you all over the country. Between us fighting over the placement of the condiments at dinner, the chatting on the long car rides. The singing out loud of songs in the radio, embarrassing whoever was with us, and just being able to be with my dad made it the best part of all. I miss you so much. Hug mom for me and tell her to not give you a hard time if you accidentally add cloves to the chicken and rice. I love you both.

The Coding community has lost a great leader. I was able to meet him once for a coding education session - he made things that were hard to understand easy. His kindness and cheerfulness never ended. He will be greatly missed by many. My condolences to his family.

I was stationed with Commander Gold at the Naval Hospital in Naples, Italy. He was ALWAYS a wonderful doctor, friend and comrade. I respected him, the rank he held and his genuine kindness to everyone. My memories of him will last me all my days. I met his wife Judy back in those days too and she was his equal for all the same reasons. My condolences to his family. He was a treasure. Fair winds and following seas, Dr. Gold. I salute you! I am sorry it took so long for me to know that a great Man, Teacher and friend has past from this life to God's Hands. I will always remember the simplicity of explanations in coding and medical conditions. He was the greatest mentor I have ever had, I will miss him a lot. To all of his family God Bless!

Bob was the QUINTESSENTIALLY perfect neighbor everybody wishes to have. My husband Michael and I lived across the street from him for over a decade, and just what a tremendous loss for our whole neighborhood, the Briers. Briers will never be quite the same. My heart hurts for us and his wonderful family, and I know he was looking down on the Memorial Service held for him this past Saturday with a smile...as his beautiful daughter Samantha spoke so lovingly of him...it was very well done by all who contributed. Dr. Gold was a wonderful person, always happy and cheerful, iconic in every way - admirable by ALL. May he rest in peace, and Heaven is a very cheerful place with him there!! Love to all who loved him....we surely did.

News traveled among the medical/surgical coding communities. What a huge loss of a passionate physician who bridged communication between his colleagues, coders and clinical documentation professionals through his newsletters, his website, his presentations, and his one-on-one phone calls. After reading about him in the obituary, he was dynamic and fun; and he certainly made every day count!! Your memories brought smiles to my heart. Please hold onto those memories. My heartfelt sympathies go out to you and your family. I prayed God will give each of you the comfort and peace, knowing that Dr Robert Gold rest in peace. I will be thinking and praying over the funeral this Saturday. We will never forget him and his legacy.

I loved Dr. Gold! Worked with him on CDI projects and just talked to him a couple of weeks ago about a potential project collaboration. I loved his humor and his down to earth tell-it-like-it-is attitude. He will be missed by many.

My heart is broken. Sometimes there are no words to express the feelings of the heart. How do I describe the most selfless person I know? How do I explain the multitude of ways Bob has helped and guided me over the years, generously sharing his time and knowledge? Sometimes in life, you find a special friend, someone who changes your life just by being part of it. Bob made this world a better and happier place and I will miss him every day. I believe God saw he was getting tired when a cure was not to be, so he wrapped his arms around him and said "come to me". Goodbye my sweet friend, it was an honor to have you in my life. May cherished memories bring comfort to family and friends. He will live forever in our hearts.

My precious friend Rob/Bob, how can I live without you? You were the light and laughter in my life, my soul mate, my beloved Judy's husband, father of beautiful children and grandchildren, giver of unexpected gifts and always a confidant and cheerleader. I worried and fretted over you for years and was so very happy when Valerie came into your life, I could finally worry less when she did. Rest in Peace my buddy, I'll see you before long. Michael, Jonathan, Samantha, and Valerie, feel the love coming your way. Robert Stanley Gold was one very special man. The world is a better place because he lived among us.

Dr Gold had such a delightful way of making the world of medical data interesting and fun. He understood the impact of high quality documentation on patient care - and he truly cared, giving 100% towards improving the process. In person and in his educational articles, his humor was always appreciated and he will be missed!

I often called him Dr. G when we worked together at Healthcare Management Advisors (HMA). He was HMA's Vice President of Clinical Information Services from 1999 2002 and served hundreds of clients throughout the country. Besides his great intellect and ability to communicate most effectively with coders, nurses, physicians and administrators, he had a great wit and sense of humor. I remember that he loved his family and Mustang convertible, wore some of the most unique ties, collected baseball cards and unopened McDonald's Kids's Meal toys, was a great cook, and always went overboard with Halloween and Christmas decorations in his front yard. I will miss him, and expect that many more will, too.
