MULLING, Esther ESTHER BARNES MULLING Esther Barnes Mulling, 88 of Marietta died on Friday, November 16, 2012. Graveside Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 19, 2012 at Cheatham Hill Memorial Park Cemetery in Marietta with Rev. Dr. Sam Matthews officiating. Esther Lee Barnes Mulling was a person of many interests and pursuits. She was active for many years in Marietta-Cobb County Civic life. She was president of the Cobb Marietta Junior League, President of the Marietta Junior Woman's Club, President of the Honeysuckle Garden, and President of the Georgia Genealogical Society, was a scout leader and served on the board of many organizations. She was an active investor in the stock market which was of great interest to her. She was also interested in music, having at various times in life played the piano, cornet, violin, guitar, and pipe organ. She loved the water and fishing, especially salt water fishing and owned her own 20 foot Proline fishing boat which was kept at their second home at Fernandina Beach. She was an excellent swimmer and was a certified life guard. She enjoyed sports having played softball, basketball, volleyball, tennis and golf. She also belonged to several bridge clubs and enjoyed both duplicate and party bridge. Her husband bragged about her cooking telling friends he was dining at "Miss Esther's Kitchen." She was an excellent seamstress making her own clothes and suits. She made all the drapes, sheers, bedspreads, canopies and dust ruffles for their new home. Mrs. Mulling has shown a dynamic participation in genealogical research having been a member of the National Genealogical Society, the Virginia, North Carolina Maryland and Marietta-Cobb Genealogical Societies. She was a member of the Alfred Holt Colquitt UDC, Fielding Lewis DAR, Colonial Dames of the XXVII Century, Daughters of 1812, the Huguenot Society of Maninkintowne VA, the Jamestowne Society, and the Mayflower Society. Mrs. Mulling was born in Milledge- ville, Georgia January 8, 1924 daughter of Emmett Lee Barnes, Jr. and Esther Wilburn Barnes. She moved with her family at an early age to Statesboro where she lived until her marriage on 24 June 1945 to George W. Mulling of Baxley, Georgia. She graduated from Statesboro High School and then attended what is now Georgia Southern University for one and 1/2 years. She was a member of a local sorority (there were no national sororities at that time) and was voted a member of the "beauty court." She then transferred to the University of Georgia for one and 1/2 years and graduated with a degree in Business Administration. She was a member of Delta, Delta, Delta sorority and the Rifle Club. After she and her husband married they both attended the University of Missouri in Columbia Missouri, where both obtained their Masters' degree. The Mullings moved to Marietta in 1950 when her husband accepted a position with the Georgia Department of Education. She searched for property and contracted the building of their home on their private lake. She would often go out in the john boat, fish and have a fish fry for friends. She and her husband entertained often and joined their friends in singing along with the player piano in their playroom. They had Senior Olympic parties, barbecues, formal dinners and informal parties. Mr. & Mrs. Mulling were world travelers, having visited all of the Scandinavian Countries, most of the European and Asian countries. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a trip to Ireland. Mrs. Mulling and her husband were charter members of Pinetree Country Club where both were avid golfers. They attended the First United Methodist Church in Marietta were they were members of the Fellowship Sunday School class. Surviving are her husband, George W. Mulling, her son Mark Barnes Mulling (Beth) and their four children: Jason (Hope) and their three children, twins Dylan and Kayla and Lily of Gainesville, Georgia, Jake Mulling of Marietta, Jessica (Jeremy) Kittle of Dawsonville, and Jamey Mulling of Marietta. Her family was the center of her life. A great grandson Hunter Rylee Mulling, her parents and her brother Emmett Wilburn "Buddy" Barnes predeceased her. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society-Cobb Unit, 1825 Barrett Lakes Blvd., Kennesaw, GA 30144. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 18th at the Mulling residence. Although I didn't know this Ester, I knew her mother well as she & my mother, Nannette Cone, were close friends & both music teachers in Statesboro, Ga.. I took piano from mother Ester. I grew up knowing & loving this family and my thoughts & prayers are with your family.
