Family-Placed Death Notice

WALKER, Bill "UNCLE" BILL WALKER Bill Walker, 80, of Marietta, passed away Thursday, September 27th, at his home in West Cobb County. Funeral Services will be held 10:00 a.m., Friday, October 5th, at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home and Crematory in Marietta with Bishop Clarence White officiating. Interment will take place at 12:30 pm at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton. Bill was born August 21, 1932 at the family home in McCaysville, GA which he shared with his four siblings. His early years were spent in McCaysville, later attending Berry School in Rome, GA. Joining the US Air Force in 1950, he served two tours of duty in Korea. He served as an attaché in Japan for nine years, then served two tours of duty in Vietnam. He returned to work at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., completing his military career. Later, he joined the Teamsters Union, serving as labor dispute negotiator. From 1970 until now he dedicated his life to working with alcoholics and drug addicts, opening one of the first juvenile treatment facilities (New Freedom Lodge). He was part owner of Half-Way Turn Around Facility and was a "Founding Father" in Narcotics Anonymous in Georgia. A much loved work for him was at the Washington Cemetery in Decatur, GA where he was lovingly named "Uncle Bill" and with his bountiful knowledge of the area gave lectures to visitors and tours of the historic area. He was described by many as the most generous and non-judgmental person they have ever known. He was a friend to all he met. Survivors include his wife, Anne T. Walker, four daughters, Tanya Walker of Athens, TN, Melissa Walker of Atlanta, GA, JoLynn Sharpton, Cleveland, TN, Vickie Jenkins of Duluth, GA; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
