Bobbie CRAWFORD Obituary

CRAWFORD, Bobbie Clifford "Bob" Bobbie Clifford Crawford, 77, formerly of McCaysville, Georgia passed away on Friday November 10, 2017. Bob was a resident of Douglasville, Georgia since 1969. He was the sixth of nine children born to Carl and Nona Crawford. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his dedicated wife Linda Faye Swain Crawford on 7/3/17 of Polk County and brothers, Brownie and Jack Crawford both of Water Valley, MS. Bob had battled poor health and suffered three stokes in the past ten years. Bob is survived by two sons, Myles of Douglasville, Derick (Angie) and grandson Wil of Valdosta, Georgia. Surviving siblings and their respective spouses are: Doris Crawford Olnick of Blue Ridge, GA., Pete (Thelma) Crawford of Juliet, TN, Johnnie (Myles) Watkins of McCaysville, GA, Gene (Tressie) Crawford of Morganton, GA, Jim (Sally) Crawford of Blue Ridge, GA, and Joe (Susan) Crawford of Toccoa, GA. Bob was a 1959 graduate of West Fannin High School where he was both an accomplished football player and theatric performer. Like his siblings, he was no stranger to the daily work of his parent's dairy farm and his older brother's poultry operation. Although his attendance was hampered, Bob's teachers remembered him well for his ability to learn quickly and retain knowledge. He served as secretary of his sophomore class. After high school, Bob joined the navy. He served on aircraft carriers: Constellation, Randolph, and Forrestal. He earned the rank of Electrician's Mate (EM2, E-5) and later served two years in reserves. After his active navy years, he pursued a career as an Elevator/Escalator Technician. For over thirty years he was known as a "go to guy" for trouble-shooting elevator problems. Bob was employed by Westinghouse Electric and Atlantic Elevators. Bob's knowledge was self-taught, but he helped finance the formal education of others. He served many years as secretary of local 32 Elevator Constructors Union in Atlanta. Bob enjoyed out of doors and was active in developing youth of his community. He led by example, serving as Scoutmaster of Troop 949 in Douglasville. Numerous boys advanced to become Eagle Scouts under Bob's leadership from 1978 until 1987. Bob loved nothing more than hiking the trails with his troop and learning from nature. Bob enjoyed hiking, especially to Standing Indian Mountain on the Appalachian Trail in NC and Panther Creek Falls in The Cohuttas' of north Ga. His son Derick continues that legacy as Scoutmaster of a troop in the Valdosta area. Bob will be remembered and greatly missed by those young men, his elevator work buddies, friends and family. Remembrance ceremonies for Bob Crawford are as follows: Friends/Coworkers and Family Visitation: Saturday 11/18/17, 2-3 pm Hightower's Memorial Chapel, 7034 Broad Street Douglasville, GA 30134. Memorial Service by Bill Shipp & Presentation of Flag by Navy Personnel: Saturday 11/18/17 at 3 pm - Hightower's Memorial Chapel. Sunday 11/26/17 - Frank Hirdining (of Kalamazoo, MI) - Bob's Navy Buddy will disperse Bob's ashes at the USS Yorktown Aircraft Carrier Museum into the Atlantic in Charleston, SC. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to the Boy or Girl Scouts of America in memory of Bob C. Crawford.
