THURMOND, Margaret MARGARET TURNER THURMOND Dateline: Lake Mary, Florida Margaret (Turner) Thurmond, of Lake Mary, Florida, passed away on November 24, 2012 in Marion, North Carolina. She was the daughter of the late P. Virgil and Lola Brooks Turner of Atlanta, GA. She was married to Thomas Thurmond for 64 years. Margaret grew up in Atlanta where she attended Girls' High School, graduated from West Georgia Junior College, and the University of Georgia. After college, Margaret was employed at Fort McPherson Army Post as a Food Chemist. When her Navy husband was recalled for active duty for Korea, she became a military wife and mother, traveling and making life-long friends in many places. Margaret and Tom were married at Peachtree Christian Church in Atlanta where they were members for 63 years. They lived in Dunwoody, Ga. when Tom was a Reservist. While her daughters, Peggy and Nancy were growing up, she taught in the DeKalb County Schools. Other than her church activities where she taught children's 3rd and 4th grades for 20 years, she was a member of The Group of Priscilla, The Altar Guild, and The Partners Class. She was also a Girl Scout Leader. She was a member of the Kingsley Garden Club and Bridge Club. After retiring, they moved to Lake Mary, FL. Margaret is survived by her husband, Thomas Thurmond, her daughters Peggy Waldrep, (Clifford) of Frederick, MD and Nancy Thurmond of Lake Mary, FL, grandchildren, Ginny DiPierro of Ft. Worth, TX, Laura Nixon of Lubbock, TX, Andrew Antolic of Gainesville, FL, Emily Antolic of Fairfax, VA, Eric Antolic of Tallahassee, FL, and Alex Antolic of Lake Mary, FL, her brother, Dr. Howard Turner (Madelina) of Fairburn, GA and brother, Ben Turner (Betty) of Atlanta and many nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at Peachtree Christian Church, 1580 Peachtree St. NW, Atlanta, GA. 30309-2466 on December 16th at 2:30pm. In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Margaret may be made to the Heritage Fund at Peachtree Christian Church. Westmoreland Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.
