Family-Placed Death Notice

STEELMON, Dr. Peggy Dr. Peggy Smith Steelmon, age 83 of Carrollton, died Wednesday, April 17, 2013 in Tanner Medical Center, Carrollton. Dr. Steelmon was born February 20, 1930 in Carroll County the daughter of the late Revis Rastus Smith and Cora Lee Furr Smith. Dr. Steelmon was a graduate of West Georgia College and earned her Ed.D. from the University of Georgia in 1968. She went on to serve the State of Georgia as an Educator for over three decades. She taught and was a Principal in The City Schools of Decatur until 1970 when she joined the faculty of the University of West Georgia. She retired from West Georgia with over 20 years of service as a Professor of Education, Middle Grades/ Reading Department. Dr. Steelmon also served as State Director for the Georgia Committee for Elementary and Middle Schools, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools until 2004. She was Methodist by faith and a long time member of The First United Methodist Church of Carrollton. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Bill Walton, Carrollton, and two beloved dogs, Bandit and Rusty. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her sister and brother-in-law, Genelle and George McRee.
