Pina Leopold Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

LEOPOLD, Pina PINA LAMIS LEOPOLD Pina Lamis Leopold, 98, passed away on September 16, 2011 at Buckingham South after a brief illness. She was born in Birmingham, Alabama on October 16, 1912, the daughter of Zaharie and James Lamis. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband of 33 years, Basil L. Leopold; her sister, Cecile Lamis, and brothers, Charles, Andrew and Theodore (Teddy) Lamis. She is survived by her nephews, Stratton (Mary) Leopold, Louis (Sandra) Leopold, and niece Beki Leopold-Petras, God-daughters, Cathy Robertson, Tia (Eddie) Ramsey, Cathy (Billy) Lamas, Cindy (John) Nasworthy and her namesake, Kalliope Nasworthy, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews from Atlanta, Savannah and Greece. She grew up with her family in Macon, Georgia. During World War II she ran the family Dry Cleaning Business (Century Cleaners), while the men in the family served our nation. Following the war she met and married the love of her life, Basil L. Leopold and the couple made their home in Savannah. Pina spent the rest of her life in Savannah "creating tasty memories" as Basil was the youngest of the three brothers who started the popular creamery Leopold Brothers at Gwinnett and Habersham. Pina and Basil opened their very own location at Medical Arts Shopping Center in 1962 and called it Basil Leopold's Restaurant where together they worked for 20 years and continued a tradition that was started in 1919; including the famous Tutti-Fruitti Ice Cream. After his death in 1981 she continued to run the business. Pina added her culinary signature to the shop; especially her fabulous and famous cakes and pies that to this day bring a smile to those who remember them. They served breakfast and lunch to most of the local medical community in the area. Mrs. Leopold sold the business in 1982 and retired. Later her nephew, Stratton has carried on the family tradition with "Leopold's Ice Cream Shoppe" on Broughton Street. Mrs. Leopold was an active member of the St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church and the Philoptochos Society. Mrs. Leopold was also active with the Ardlsy Park Garden Club. She was always in control, dignified, and a gracious lady with a strong faith in her religion and love for family. She enjoyed and made many friends during her time at Buckingham South. Her genuine caring, kindness and pure southern gentility touched all that knew her. Visitation will be Monday, September 19th, from 5 -7 pm at St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church with Trisagion Services at 7pm. Funeral Service will be at 11am on Tuesday, September 20th at the St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church with Father Vasile Mihai officiating. Burial: Greenwich Section of Bonaventure Cemetery. Memorial contributions: St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church, 14 West Anderson Street, Savannah, GA 31401; Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church, 859 1st ST., Macon, GA 31201; or Spanish Oaks Hospice, 8510 Whitefield Ave, Savannah, GA 31406. It was such an inspiration to see Pina and Mr. Basil so happy together all those years we visited their Restaurant. It was so obvious that they remained sweethearts. Pina was an elegant lady who treated everyone like they were family, always the gracious hostess. She loved to share her recipes and I remember her pulling pkgs. of Filo dough from the freezer for me since at that time it wasn't easy to find. She was generous and always kind, with a smile that melted your heart. She was greatly loved. May her memory be eternal.

I formally met Ka. Pina several years ago at the hospital in Savannah where my Aunt Marie Constantine was dying of cancer. A very gracious lady and very attentive in helping Aunt Marie to rest in peace in her final days. She makes us all proud to be Greeks and the heritage we have. May her memory be eternal.
