January 25, 2021

Today is January 26, 2021. I am hopeful that this communication link via Legacy.com remains open. My name is Howard L. Chinn and I am writing to you for two reasons.

First, my belated but sincere and heartfelt condolences on the passing of Col. Eng.

Secondly, I am writing to make sure your family is aware of the Chinese American W!! Veterans Recognition Project (www.caww2.org).

My father, Howard Y. Chinn served under Col. Eng during World War II. My dad once told me that your father was the only person he’d ever met who spoke Chinese with a southern drawl. I believe there were very few people that my father encountered during his lifetime that he respected and held in such high esteem as Ernest Eng.

For a time during the War, my father was stationed at Fort Snelling in Minnesota as part of a group of Chinese American soldiers. While there, he met my mother, they married and after the War, they raised my sister and me in Minneapolis.

When I planned to marry in Atlanta, my father reached out to your father and I was honored that your father and mother attended my wedding in 1986.

So when I first learned of the Chinese American WWII Veterans Recognition Project (CAWW2VRP), I of course thought of my father’s service and the service of three of his brothers. And I thought of Col. Eng and the other soldiers that my father served with.

Through the efforts of my cousins and me, the service of my father and my uncles has been recognized and their names are listed on the Project’s website along with the other honorees. I continue to check and do not see Col. Eng’s name listed.

With your father in mind, I was wondering if there was a way for me to secure his recognition while knowing very little about him. So I did what all of us do nowadays when we’re wondering about something: I googled him and found the Legacy.com obituary. And discovered that he has family.

I believe that the CAWW2VRP is a well-deserved and long overdue endeavor. Your father and your family deserve this recognition.

I hope you’ll go to the website and learn about the Project if you don’t already know about it.

If there is anything I can do to be of assistance, please feel free to contact me.

Warmest regards,

Howard L. Chinn
