Helen Huey Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

HUEY, Helen Cahill HELEN CAHILL HUEY SEPT.1910-FEB. 2012 Helen Cahill Huey, a Buckhead homemaker for more than 70 years, died on February 6 at the age of 101. Born in Talbotton, Ga., the daughter of Helen Spain Cahill and John Stewart Cahill, she attended Wesleyan College in Macon until moving to Atlanta in 1928. There, while working at the Retail Credit Company (now Equifax), she met and married John Wesley Huey. The couple moved to the Garden Hills neighborhood of Buckhead where they raised two children, Helen Elizabeth Huey and John W. Huey Jr. For the last 15 years she has lived at St. Anne's Terrace. She and her husband joined Peachtree Road Methodist Church in 1944, and she remained a member for the remaining 68 years of her life. For more than 20 years she was a member of the Pink Ladies Auxiliary of Emory University Hospital, where both her children were born. She was also a member of the Cherokee Chapter of the D.A.R. for more than 60 years, and a longtime member of the Sharondale Garden Club. Mrs. Huey is survived by her son John and a daughter-in-law, Kate Huey-both of Charleston, S.C.-- and two grandsons, John W. Huey IV (Jake), of Washington, D.C., and Cole Ellis Huey of Charleston. Her daughter, Helen, predeceased her in 1997, as did her husband in 1987. She was also predeceased by a stepdaughter, Carolyn Huey Harris. Mrs. Huey passed away at Hospice Atlanta following a short illness. She asked that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Methodist Children's Home in Decatur, to Hospice Atlanta, or to the charity of your choice. A graveside service will be held 2 PM Saturday, February 11, 2012 at Arlington Memorial Park. Funeral arrangements will be handled by H.M. Patterson & Son, Arlington Chapel.

Dear John, Kate, Jake, and Cole,
Helen Huey lived to an age that no longer seems impossible. More remarkably, from all I heard, she remained in good physical and mental shape for most of her remarkable life, making all your lives that much richer. And she made the TODAY show, something none of us have done. Even when death should be expected, it never is. Please accept my sympathies and my best wishes.

John, Jake and Cole,

I have very fond memories of Mrs. Huey and the times I spent with her and my very dear friend Helen. I will be out of town this week-end, and will not be able to attend the service. You are in my thoughts and prayers. I miss Helen and think of her often.
