BENNETT, III., Lerone After a courageous fight Lerone Bennett III, born May 29, 1960, succumbed to his battle with lymphoma January 21, 2013, at home in Atlanta surrounded by family and friends. The Chicago native served as a former Cook County Illinois Attorney and College Professor. Survivors: wife, Janet Anderson-Bennett, DeKalb County Police Department Fiscal Management Officer; sisters, Joy T. Bennett of Chicago, IL, Constance J. Bennett and Courtney J. Bennett both of San Diego, CA; devoted family and friends. Lerone is the son of noted author, Lerone Bennett Jr. and the late Gloria Bennett and son-in-law of nationally renowned composer, T.J. Anderson, Jr. and wife Lois Anderson, retired librarian specialist. Service Saturday, January 26, 2013, 10 AM, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 25 Boulevard NE. Instate 9 AM. Interment Westview Cemetery. Family and friends are asked to assemble at the church on day of service at 9:30 AM. Viewing today 5 - 9 pm. Lerone was a great friend who always kept me laughing. The last time I saw him was in 2010 and he just pulled me aside and said it looked like their was something on my mind. It was about my father. We spoke and he just advised me and was so genuine and instinctivelysaid all the right things. He told me he cared about me and that meant so much. I can't believe it has been 7 years. Once again I pray that grace and joy continue to cover the family.

I am a classmate of Lerone who graduated from Hales Franciscan High in 1978. I just recently found out that Lerone was residing in Atlanta and attended the same parish church (Our Lady of Lourdes)that I've been a member of since 1988. I'm so sorry that our paths never crossed again in life after high school & in our adult lives. I want to extend my heartfelt condolences to Lerone's family & friends. He will be missed. I recall our high school days as fun, ambitious & Friday stepper-sets at the local/rival high schools in Chicago. He was cool & unique! I pray that Jesus lifts your family's burdens and extends the comfort & healing to all in need of Gods blessing. Peace to all.

(Rev. 14:13) I am deeply saddened by the news of the passing of my dear friend Lerone. We worked together at Juvenile Court in Chicago. As a minister, I would encourage him in his walk with Christ and am convinced that he was truly a man of God. To his wife and family, reflect on the healing words of God in Romans 8:38-39, "...nothing in all creations shall be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord."...NOT EVEN DEATH! Our beloved Lerone is resting in the arms of our loving and kind God. I know I will see my dear friend again. God Bless You!

Lerone and I grew up together in Chicago. We went to elementary school together and later attended high school together. The early years growing up we played sports together and he was as much a playground legend as I. We played high school baseball together and I enjoyed every second playing sports with and sometimes against him. I will always remember the days playing hockey in the front of your house in the winters of Chicago. It was an honor to be in your presents and you will be deeply missed my friend. I met Lerone in the summer of 1978 playing baseball at Stony Island Park. He quickly made me feel a part of the team with his warm personality and infectious smile. Being the only Latino on the team he playfully called me "Julio". Everytime, after that summer, whenever we would run into each other he would greet me with a brotherly hug and a warm smile. No matter how long it had been since we saw each other we would pick up as if we had just seen yesterday. Your warm smile and infectious personality it what I remember most about you. It is also what I will miss the most. You are with the Creator now. Rest in peace mi hermano.

Lerone's effervesent peronality and infectious laughter allowed us to share many hilarious times with him in college. I think that now he might say the following:

I am stunned by the passing of our dear, beloved Lerone. You breathed new life into him when he moved to Atlanta and married. He was so excited. He was a childhood friend, brother to me and honorary godfather to my son. We did not speak often but when we did it was if we never departed.
He was a bright light and his shine shall never be dimmed.
