Family-Placed Death Notice

KELLY, John JOHN HUBERT KELLY John Hubert Kelly of Conyers, Georgia passed away on September 15th, 2011 at Emory University Hospital after a courageous two year battle with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). John acted as Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern and South Asian Affairs during the Gulf War from 1989 to 1991. He continued on to serve as United States Ambassador to Finland from 1991 to 1994. After retirement from the Foreign Service, John ran his own consulting service specializing in international business. John found great fulfillment in nature, and there was no better way to spend an afternoon than working in the yard. He also embarked on daily walks and completed his final segment of the pilgrimage of the Camino de Santiago in Spain in 2005. John is survived by his wife Helena "Maritza" Ajo-Kelly, their daughter Maria, his son David (Lida), his sister Kathryn, brothers James and Michael (Joan), and nieces and nephews.
