Andrew Austin "Andy" MERDEK Obituary
MERDEK, Andrew Austin "Andy" Andrew Austin Merdek, 67, of Atlanta and formerly of Portland, ME, died November 18, 2017. Mr. Merdek graduated from Middlebury College in Vermont and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He then worked for The Portland Press Herald as a reporter and editor until he started law school at The University of Virginia. While at The University of Virginia Andy was a member of the Order of the Coif and graduated in 1978. After completing law school he became a partner with Dow, Lohnes and Albertson where he was the firm's principle media lawyer. He then joined the Atlanta Journal and Constitution where he was their general manager and vice president. Mr. Merdek eventually retired from Cox Enterprises as their vice president and general counsel. Andy is survived by his wife of 34 years, Jeanne Mullen Merdek; sons, David Philip Merdek, Jonathan W. Merdek; granddaughter, Abigail Merdek; and sister and brother-in-law, Avis and Roger Smith. A graveside service will be Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at 9:30 a.m. at Arlington Memorial Park. After the graveside service there will be a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. followed by a reception at H.M Patterson and Son, Arlington Chapel, 173 Allen Rd., NE, Sandy Springs, GA 30328.
