Andrew Lee Barksdale Obituary
Andrew Lee Barksdale went to be with the Lord at Kirby Pines Retirement Community in Memphis, Tennessee on December 3, 2017. He was loved deeply by his family and friends and will be missed. Andy was born April 9, 1925 in Trenton, Tennessee; son of James William Barksdale and Maggie May Mathis. He grew up in the farming community of Frogjump and attended Peabody High School. At Peabody he was voted "most likely to succeed," was the president of his junior and senior class, and wrote the lyrics of the school's alma mater that is still sung today. Following high school, Andy answered his country's call and volunteered for the U.S. Navy, serving honorably in World War II. He was the first in the family to attend college and graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1950 with a degree in electrical engineering. At a Tennessee vs. Ole Miss football game he met the love of his life, Aimee Joy Shofner. They married in 1951 and spent 63 years together before Aimee passed in 2014. Andy worked for Honeywell Corporation 35 years and retired in 1988 so that he and his bride could travel the world together. Andy loved landscaping and gardening and served many years on the Board of Directors of the Memphis Horticultural Society, serving as President in 1993. Andy was honored by his home town of Trenton, TN on his 80th birthday when the mayor declared the occasion "Andrew Barksdale Day". Andy volunteered countless hours at the Germantown library helping his bride Aimee with her activities there. Andy loved family history and genealogy and traced the family ancestry back to medieval England. He adored his uncle Horace who served in World War II as a gunner on a B-17, and was killed on a mission over Germany. Many years later Andy established contact with one of Horace's crew who parachuted to safety, so that he could visit the gravesite of his brother in arms.

Andy is predeceased by his bride Aimee Joy Shofner, his parents, his sisters Sallie Mae Barksdale, Lola Ann Curtis, and Ruby Edwards, his grandson Michael Scott Barksdale, Jr. and his favorite cousin Evelyn Lowery, a revered English teacher at Peabody High School for many years. Andy is survived by his daughter Lindsey Doris Barksdale of Gainesville, GA; son Michael Scott Barksdale, Sr. and his wife Suzanne of Atlanta, GA; his grandsons James Matthew Barksdale and his wife Jessica, and his great-granddaughter Crofton Anne of Nashville, TN; and grandson Andrew Taylor Barksdale and his wife Sarah of Atlanta, GA. A service of remembrance will be scheduled on Saturday, December 9, 2017 in the chapel at Kirby Pines Retirement Community, Memphis, TN. In lieu of flowers, donations in Andy's memory may be made to the Memphis Botanic Garden, ATTN: Development Department, 750 Cherry Road, Memphis, TN 38117.
