SWANSTON, Barbara After a long struggle with Alzheimer's, Barbara Leigh Brownlow Swanston (aka Bobbie) of Roswell, GA, passed away Thursday, December 14, 2017 at the age of 85. Bobbie was born in West Chester, PA on April 26, 1932 to John Charles Victor Brownlow and Ruth Mable (Hutchinson) Brownlow. She grew up in Paoli, PA and then moved to Barrington, RI where she attended the Lincoln School in Providence and then matriculated from Mt Holyoke College. While at college she met and married her best friend and forever love, Thomas Robinson Swanston, on December 22, 1953. The couple then had four children and lived in many places over the years including San Diego CA, Boston MA, Annapolis MD, Hudson OH, Schenectady NY, Waynesboro VA, Wilton and New Milford CT, Toronto Ontario, and their final long-term home in the Atlanta/Roswell area. While living in Toronto, Bobbie completed her advanced degree in Early Childhood Education at York University, and later received her teaching certification at Georgia State University. She was an elementary and middle school teacher for over 20 years, in New Milford, CT as well as at the St Francis School, the New School, and Mill Springs Academy in the Atlanta area. In her retirement she provided docent support primarily at the Atlanta History Center, was very active in yoga, an avid reader and fan of crossword puzzles, and kept her husband and family on an even keel throughout her life. Bobbie is survived by her husband, Thomas Robinson Swanston Sr. of Roswell; her 3 sons and a daughter and their spouses: Thomas Robinson Swanston Jr. & Gail Foster of Chattahoochee Hills, GA, Leigh Swanston Rothman & Robert Joseph Rothman of Roswell, GA, David Calder Swanston of Roswell, GA, and William Brownlow Swanston & Michele Andrews Swanston of Marietta, GA; and 6 grandchildren: Dinara & Eric Rothman, Graham & Olivia Swanston, Crystal Parker & Terra Parker-Maddux; many nieces and nephews, and her beloved dachshund, Stevie Nicks, who visited her daily with Tom at her memory care home. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings: Donald Grey Brownlow, Elizabeth Anne Brownlow Mullin, and John Hutchinson Brownlow. There will be a memorial service to celebrate Bobbie's life at 2:30PM, Friday January 19th at Saint Catherine's Episcopal Church located at 571 Holt Road, Marietta, Georgia 30068. The service will be presided over by Bobbie's niece, the Reverend Pamela Bakal, who is the Rector of Grace Church in Nutley, NJ. In the future when Bobbie's husband, Tom, passes, both wished that their ashes be scattered together off the coast of St George Island, FL, where the extended families have gathered each summer for over 25 years. The family wishes to thank the special care givers who provided comfort to Bobbie over the last four years and ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the .
