Beatrice Sweat Murray MACKEY Obituary
MACKEY, Beatrice Sweat Murray Beatrice Sweat Murray Mackey, 97, of Summerville, SC, widow of Joseph Gordon Murray, Jr., and John William Mackey, passed away at her home on October 6, 2017. She was born on December 10, 1919, in Knightsville, SC, the daughter of Augustus and Senith Owens Sweat. Bea was a very kind, loving, and giving person, an excellent cook and gracious hostess. She was extremely devoted to her family and will be greatly missed. She was very talented as a designer of clothing, a tailor, and seamstress. During the late 1960s, she had a business on Richardson Avenue known as the "Holly Bush." Throughout her long career, she had many clients who became wonderful friends whom she loved. She was a long-time member of Bethany United Methodist Church, the Sue Knight Sunday School Class, which she loved and enjoyed so much, as well as her church circle, the Herbert McElhaney Circle. She also served on the Bereavement Committee. In addition to her two husbands and her parents, Bea was predeceased by a daughter, Gloria Murray Smith, and two sons, Rodney Murray and Fred Murray, Sr. Also a sister and her husband, Gertie Lee Sweat Crawley (Adair); two brothers, both Methodist ministers, and their wives: Rev. Lewis A. Sweat (Dean) and Rev. Howard D. Sweat (Annie Dell); and a brother-in-law, Louie Haselden, and a nephew, Jeffrey Haselden. She is survived by two daughters, Miriam Murray Joiner (Buford) of Summerville and Atlanta, GA, and Linda Murray Patterson (W.T.) of New Concord, KY; also one sister, Joyce Sweat Haselden, of Hampton, VA. She leaves nine grandchildren: Jenny Murray Creson (Gene), Elaine Murray, Rhett Smith, Freddie Murray, and Brad Murray (Kim), all of Summerville; Allison Murray Shea of Atlanta, GA; Maria Smith Agustin (Mike) of Moncks Corner; Paige Patterson Pope (Tim) of Missouri City, TX; and Payton Patterson (Kristy) of Panama City, FL. Survivors also include 12 great-grandchildren: Julianna Johnston of Augusta, GA; Matthew Shea of Atlanta, GA; Eric Creson, Drew Murray, Allie Murray, and Trent Murray, all of Summerville; Will and John Andrew Patterson of Panama City, FL; Rivers and Ava Beatrice Pope of Missouri City, TX; and Abby and Chory Pope of Grand Rapids, MI. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews who were very dear and special to her. Visitation will be at Parks Funeral Home in Summerville on Tuesday, October 10, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 11, at Spell Chapel, Bethany United Methodist Church, at 11:00 a.m. Burial to follow at Summerville Cemetery on Boone Hill Road.
