Carl COOPER Obituary
COOPER, Carl Lee NORFOLK Chaplain Carl Lee Cooper, 87, died at home on October 4th, 2017. The son of Charlie Foster and Minnie Belle Cooper, Carl was born on October 20, 1929 and spent his young life in Atlanta, Georgia. From the age of nine, Carl knew he was going to be a preacher and, at age 18, he preached his first sermon. After graduating from Atlanta Christian College (now Point University) he ministered to churches in Adairsville, Savanna, Atlanta, and Bainbridge, Georgia; Kingsport, Tennessee; and Chesapeake, Virginia. He served as the Assistant Chaplain at the Bainbridge (Georgia) State Hospital, Southwestern State Hospital Thomasville (Georgia) and retired as Chaplain of the Riverside Regional Convalescent Center in Newport News. Upon receiving his MSEd from Old Dominion University, he became a Licensed Professional Marriage and Family Counselor in both Newport News and Norfolk. During his ministry and retirement he filled in where needed for over 80 churches in the area. Carl is survived by his wife, Nedena Cooper; daughter, Kathleen Mosteller (Florida); sons, Mark Cooper (Georgia), Philip [Jenny] Cooper (Tennessee), Rick Smith (Midolthian), and Rob [Sue] Smith (Va Beach); eight grandchildren, Jennifer, Gina, Kristen, Christopher, Meagan, Daniel, Alex, and Faith; and one great-grandson, Ozill. He was preceded in death by his sister, Catherine Cooper (Georgia) and his first wife, Dorothy Patricia Cooper. Celebration of Life will be held at the First Church of God, 8600 Granby Street, Norfolk on Saturday, October 21st at 11:00 a.m. Family visitation one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the , SEVA Chapter, 6350 Center Drive, Suite 102, Norfolk, VA 23502-4017.
