Carolyn Lichtenberg Obituary
LICHTENBERG, Carolyn Carolyn Helman Lichtenberg, 71: Former Pi Beta Phi president and role model for young women Carolyn Helman Lichtenberg was amazing. Her friends would tell you that she was warm, kind, hilarious and infinitely loyal. Admirers would tell you she was accomplished, strong, graceful and beautiful. Her family would tell you she was caring, smart, tenacious, witty, stubborn and so very deeply loved. Carolyn grew up in a small Ohio town called Waverly with adoring parents and two brothers. She went to Ohio University where she met her true love, Joe Lichtenberg who died too soon. Carolyn and Joe had two daughters, Sara and Elizabeth, who were the light of their lives. She was devoted to Pi Beta Phi Fraternity, leading and growing the fraternity as Grand President from 1985 to 1991, among other leadership roles. Each year, Pi Phi awards the Carolyn Helman Lichtenberg Crest Award to outstanding volunteers. She found lifelong friends, community and community service through Pi Phi. Carolyn will be remembered for having the greenest thumb there ever was, owing to her florist family. She entertained like Martha Stewart and made everyone feel at home. With an artistic flair and a love of the color red, Carolyn decorated, designed and created beautiful things with gusto. She adored her cuddly dogs, and her grandkids say she threw the best Christmases ever. Surrounded by people she loved, Carolyn died May 25 in Greenville, SC, her home of 11 years, of complications from cancer and chemotherapy. She was buried beside Joe in Cincinnati, Ohio, on May 29. Carolyn leaves behind many people who love her dearly, including her daughters Sara Lichtenberg Bloomquist, Elizabeth Lichtenberg Geer, her beloved companion of 21 years Bob Saacke, grandchildren Carter, Keller, Max and Audrey, sons-in-law Joel Geer and Randall Bloomquist, dear sister-in-law Sister Carol Lichtenberg, brother Hobie Helman, stepsons Scott and Teddy and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and outright fans. She joins loved ones, including her sweetheart Joe Lichtenberg, her parents Hobart and Felma Helman, her brother Charlie Helman and a whole pack of dogs, who are thrilled to see her. A memorial service in Carolyn's honor will be held Saturday, June 7, 4 p.m., at Peachtree Presbyterian Church, Kellett Chapel, 3434 Roswell Rd. NW, Atlanta, GA 30305. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts.
