Charles NICOL Obituary
NICOL, M.D., Charles F. After a brief illness, Charles F. Nicol, M.D. peacefully passed away, surrounded by his family. He was born in Brooklyn, the only child of Charles Francis Nicol, Sr. M.D. and Eleanor Veronica Nicol (Lovingham). He graduated from his beloved Brooklyn Preparatory Jesuit High School, June 1946 where he played football, basketball and baseball. After graduation, he entered Maryknoll Seminary where he studied for five years preparing for mission service. Upon leaving the seminary, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and was assigned to the 503rd Communication and Reconnaissance Group during the Korean conflict. After an honorable discharge, he decided to follow in his father's footsteps and become a physician. He graduated from NYU School of Medicine in June 1959. During his medical school days, he met a lovely brunette named Lucille Ann Maguire on a blind date. They were married soon after his graduation. The couple resettled in Buffalo, NY where Charlie completed his medical studies, becoming board certified as a neurologist and serving on the faculty of SUNY Buffalo Medical School. The family moved to Atlanta in 1976, where Charlie practiced neurology for more than 30 years at Georgia Baptist Hospital now Atlanta Medical. That same year, Charlie joined the Atlanta Country Club. He carded a hole-in-one in 2004. He played competitive bridge for decades, and in 2007 he achieved his Life Master status. In his retirement, he also took up watercolor painting. Charlie was known for his wry wit, bold ties and outlandish slacks. He and Lu loved to entertain, and their home was the hub of bridge parties, holiday celebrations and family events. Sadly, Charlie's beloved wife Lu passed away in 2001. Charlie married his second wife Melissa Mahan in 2004. Together, Charlie and Melissa traveled extensively and enjoyed playing competitive bridge for many years. Charlie is survived by his wife Melissa. Four daughters, Jean Marie (William) Lynch, Karen Elizabeth {Brian) Welch, Jaqueline Mary (Jon) Lippold, Maria Bernadette (Paine) Bone. Nine grandchildren Conrad (Katie) Lynch, Lindsay Lynch, Madeline Welch, Dylan Welch, Chad Lippold, Brett Lippold, Reagan Lippold, Hayden Bone, Zach Bone. One great granddaughter, Lucille Marie Lynch. The visitation will be held Thursday, December 28th at H.M. Patterson & Son Arlington Chapel, Sandy Springs from 5-8pm. The funeral service will be held at The Catholic Church of St. Ann in Marietta on Friday, December 29th at 11AM. Burial to follow at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Charlie's memory to the Serra Club of Atlanta, 871 Spalding Drive, Sandy Springs, GA 30328. The organization supports young men who pursue careers in the Catholic vocations. "Goodnight sweet prince and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest." William Shakespeare.
