ALLEN, Edmund Awtry Edmund (Ed) Awtry Allen passed away at Tranquility Hospice on March 6, 2018 at the age of 93. Ed was born in Atlanta, Georgia on May 8, 1924 and was the oldest of three children. As a young man, Ed learned the value of hard work and responsibility after his father's untimely death by helping support his family through his paper route. Graduating from West Fulton High School he entered the United States Army. Ed became part of the 512th Military Police Battalion serving in the European Theater in General Patton's Third Army. His Unit policed and loaded out the entire first and Third Armies for their trip across the English Channel on D-Day as well as at the lead of the Third Army's liberation of Nazi concentration camps. Returning home, he met the love of his life, Flora Jean Hooks from Swainsboro, Georgia and was married in 1947. They celebrated 57 wonderful years of marriage until Jean's death in 2005. As her health declined from the onset of Alzheimer's disease, Ed faithfully cared for her every need until her death. Ed graduated from the University of Georgia in 1952 and pursued his career in financial accounting and tax administration. He retired after 42 years of service as Treasurer of Plantation Pipe Line Company in Atlanta. In his leisure time, Ed had many interests including woodworking, model railroading and spending time outdoors. He was and avid boater spending many enjoyable years on Lake Lanier and Lake Allatoona with family and friends. Ed and Jean enjoyed their retirement years in their travels to many countries throughout the world. Ed and Jean were faithful to ground their family in the love of Jesus Christ and made their faith a center point within their lives. Ed served as a Deacon and Treasurer of Northwoods Baptist Church for many years. After moving to Marietta in 1988, they moved their membership to Marietta First United Methodist Church and were members of the Progressive Sunday School class.
