Eleanor YANCEY Obituary
YANCEY, Eleanor Garrett Mrs. Eleanor Garrett Yancey, of Atlanta, died peacefully on Oct. 5 following a lengthy battle against cancer. She was the beloved adopted daughter of LaVerne Garrett of Atlanta and studied at the High Museum Art Institute, 1952-53; Georgia State University, 1953-55; and LaGrange College, earning her bachelor's degree in 1958. She spent her life helping others: as a social worker for Fulton County Department of Family and Children's Services, 1957-61; an assistant teacher with the Atlanta Board of Education, 1973-85; a mental health crisis intervention counselor for DeKalb County Board of Health, 1985-95; and as acting director for crisis intervention, 1988-90. She was recognized as Outstanding Staff Member for the Division of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse, and also as the DCBH Outstanding Staff Member, both in 1990. She was an active member of Kappa Kappa Iota, one of the oldest organizations for educators in the U.S., and served as Lambda Chapter (Georgia) State President, 1987-88. She was preceded in death by her beloved adopted mother; former husband Robert G. Yancey; birth mother Lillian Olen Waid McKern; brother Herman W.T. McKern II; sister, Elizabeth Sanderson. She is survived by her son David Shawn Yancey and daughter Katherine Yancey Gilmore (R. Edward Gilmore; Suzanne Gilmore Balint and Linda Gilmore, and their families), as well as by her sisters and extended family.
