Frederick Sloat Van Winkle Obituary
Frederick Sloat Van Winkle, age 82, died September 20, 2017 after a lengthy battle with dementia. He was born a fourth generation Atlantan at Crawford Long Hospital in Atlanta, GA on February 10, 1935, the son of the late Edward King Van Winkle and Jenny Crocker Hodgson. He attended Mrs. Bloodworth's Kindergarten (the small building at the corner of Peachtree and Peachtree Battle) and E. Rivers School before continuing his education at Episcopal High School in Alexandria, VA where he graduated in 1953. At Episcopal, he excelled in tennis and wrestling and was a member of the honor council. In college at The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, he graduated with a bachelor's degree in English, was a member of the SAE fraternity, The Gorgons Head Lodge, and received a varsity letter for tennis. Upon returning to Atlanta in 1958, he joined Tucker Wayne & Company, and in 1960 married Faye Dora Roberts of Anniston, AL. In 1984, he founded Van Winkle & Associates Advertising which remains Atlanta's oldest independent advertising firm. Jokingly, he always said he wanted to be remembered as the creator of The Goody's Headache Powder Homerun Jackpot with The Atlanta Braves.

His civic interests included Advisory Board Membership with the Atlanta Salvation Army where he took great enjoyment as a bell ringer each December, a board of directors position of The Raoul Foundation supporting childhood asthma, and serving as an Associate Chaplain at the Shepherd Spinal Center.

Fritz' interests included 70 years of competitive tennis highlighted by three Georgia State Doubles Championships with his brother Edward K Van Winkle Jr. in the 2000s. He enjoyed playing bluegrass music on his mandolin. At the age of 72, he enrolled and became a student at the Candler School of Theology. Fritz took a particular interest in participating in sports with each of his three children: tennis and hiking with daughter Martha, hunting, fishing and golf with son Alex, and biking and kayaking with son Sloat. Fritz's dedication to family was unparalleled. He and Faye rarely missed a sports game or theatre production for their four grandchildren, Fritz II, Blair, Eliza and Will.

He is survived by his wife of almost 57 years, Faye Roberts Van Winkle; his daughter Martha Van Winkle Hausmann of Sun Valley, Idaho and her husband David William and their young son William Francis, his son Alexander Van Winkle of Atlanta, GA and his wife Elizabeth Crawford Van Winkle and their three children, Frederick Sloat, Xena Blair, and Elizabeth Roberts, his son Frederick Sloat Van Winkle Jr. and his partner Michael Robert Scheu.

He was a member of The Piedmont Driving Club and The Nine O'Clocks. The Van Winkle Family thanks Ms. Mica Manning and Ms. Kricia L. Brown of Live Oak Caregivers for their service, dedication and support. A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Monday, September 25, 2017 at The Cathedral of St. Philip, with a reception afterward in Child Hall at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Salvation Army, Metro Atlanta Area Command, P.O. Box 930188, Norcross, GA 30003-0188, SalvationArmyAtlanta.org or The Shepherd Center, 2020 Peachtree Road NW, Atlanta, GA 30309-1465, Shepherd.org
