Mr. Hatley, a native of Clay County, AL, was active in his youth at Hunter Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL. A 1939 Chemical Engineering graduate of Auburn University, Mr. Hatley entered the U.S. Army in 1941 and was a proud, decorated veteran of WWII serving as a Captain in the 976th Field Artillery Battalion. He married Marjorie Sessions of Cuthbert, GA, July 18, 1948. They moved to Atlanta, GA, joining Chamblee First United Methodist Church in 1955. He was a Sales Executive with the Chemical Services Corporation (later Univar) of Atlanta for nearly 25 years, retiring in 1981 and had resided in the Atlanta and Dunwoody area for over sixty years. Mr. Hatley had been an active member of Chamblee First United Methodist Church for over 62 years.
