Jane MURRAY

1937 - 2018

MURRAY, Jane Jane Winston Carpenter Murray died peacefully at home on November 21, 2018 after a sixteen year battle with Parkinson's. Husband, Jim, 3 children, 4 step children and six grandchildren survive. Born on November 7, 1937, and raised in Fredericksburg, VA , she was the only child of Earl Carlton Carpenter and Anne Elizabeth Dannehl Carpenter. A 1955 graduate of James Monroe High and a 1959 Hollins College graduate, she married Gerald T. Horton in the fall of 1959, and gave birth to daughter Carlton, and sons Talmadge and Nehl over the next four years. The family moved into the Garden Hills area in Atlanta, GA in 1962. Jane was an active member of the Garden Hills, Sutton Middle School and North Fulton High School PTA's, serving as President of both the Garden Hills Elementary and North Fulton groups during the height of the desegregation of Atlanta's schools. She became a single parent in 1975, and joined Klein Sieb Advertising, step one in an admirable media career that spanned the next forty years. In 1984 Jane married a fellow parishioner of Christ the King, Jim Murray. Their combined family would gather for Sunday dinner every week, and participate in special occasion gatherings like Thanksgiving Dinner for 35, and a legendary Christmas Party that featured home-cooked food including Virginia ham biscuits, a Christmas Cookie and ginger bread house extravaganza and a welcome to every family member's friends, neighbors, classmates, parishioners & ad people. Jane took special delight in playing an active role in the lives of grandchildren, Memphis Jane Hill, Elizabeth Dannehl (Danni) Horton, Sam Hudson Hill, Taylor Horton, Ella Murray, and AJ Murray. She headed the Wedding Guild at the Cathedral for 24 years and co-founded the Flower Guild in 2008. A 10:00 AM Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Monday, December 17 at the Cathedral of Christ the King, followed by a reception in the adjacent Kenny Hall. In lieu of flowers consider a modest donation to the Christ the King Flower Guild. Jane will be buried at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Fredericksburg next to her mother and father.
