Joe BURGES Obituary

BURGES, Joe Joe Burges, a barber in Tucker for more than 50 years, died Tuesday, April 2, 2019 at the age of 93. A native of Fitzgerald, Georgia, Burges was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He learned how to barber in the Navy and made that his lifelong career. He retired from Charles Barber and Style Shop on Hugh Howell Road on his 87th birthday, disappointing many regular customers. After leaving the Navy, Burges cut hair in Norfolk, Virginia, then south Georgia, and Atlanta before moving to Tucker in 1962 at the age of 36. Burges first started his own Burges and Cruce Barber Shop on Highway 29. He kept that shop until 1967 when he opened Tucker Barber Shop on Main Street. He closed that in 1999 and went to work one day a week at Charles Barber in semi-retirement. Burges was a longtime member and former officer of the Tucker Masonic Lodge No. 42 F.&A.M. He also was a longtime member of Rehoboth Baptist Church in Tucker. He is preceded in death by his wives Dorothy and Orbenia, five brothers and four sisters. Survivors include two sisters, Janelle Hadley of Kinston, Oklahoma, and Annelle Maddox of Eatonton, Georgia; four stepdaughters, Dianne Hill of Atlanta, Carolyn Carlson of Waynesville, North Carolina, Debbie Manget of Conyers, Georgia, and Aloyce Shaw of Stone Mountain, Georgia; and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Symponia Hospice, 4288 Suite A Memorial Drive, Decatur, GA 30032. Visitation will be at 11 a.m. Friday, with funeral services to follow at 1 p.m. at Bill Head Funeral Homes and Crematory, Lilburn/Tucker Chapel, 770-564-2726.

My Father was the other barber for 38 years in Tucker. Frank A Lentini, owner and operator of Franks Barber and Style Shop on
Lawrenceville Highway. Joe would cut daddy's hair and he'd cut Joes in return. Charles would cut daddy's hair and dad would cut Charles hair. Either way all the Tucker barbers took care of each other and had respect for one another. I heard many nice things from my dad about Joe. I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. It's hard to find good ole fashion barbers Norway's. They all seem to be in heaven. My dad was called home 13 years this October. May Mr Joe Rest In Peace and may they all continue to share their barber shop jokes together in heVen.

Joe was a good Christian man. When the doors opened at Rehoboth Baptist Church, he was there. I also remember seeing him showing his Christian spirit by providing golf cart rides for people visiting doctors at the medical buildings at Dekalb Medical Center. Joe will be missed by a multitude.

So glad I got to talk to Joe on the phone recently, he and my Daddy owned a barber shop together. We loved Joe and Dot!! And later Orbenia. We exchanged Christmas cards every year. Will miss him as I lost Daddy in 2002 and Mama in 2010. He was a big part of my childhood. Such a fine man!

When someone we love falls asleep in death the memories we have of them become our treasure. May those cherished memories of a life well lived and God's promise at John 6:40 bring you a measure of comfort. My condolences to the family.
