John Lynn Carr, son of Harold and Eleanor Carr, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and grew up in Lakewood, Ohio. He graduated in 1954 from Yale College and, in 1957, from Yale Divinity School. After graduation, John became an ordained minister in the United Methodist church and took his first job as founding pastor of Pleasant Hills United Methodist Church in Middleburg Heights, Ohio.

John met Adrienne Kelly on a blind date while he was visiting his parents in Denver, Colorado and the two were soon married in 1959.

From 1959 to 1976, John and Adrienne worked as partners in ministry, founding Church of the Savior United Methodist Church in Indianapolis, Indiana and then working together on the staff of First Community Church, in Columbus, Ohio. During that time they developed and then published a series of church education materials used across the world, including "Experiment in Practical Christianity," and "Power and Light." Partly due to the success of these programs, John and Adrienne were recruited by Candler School of Theology, where they taught adult education from 1976 to 1998.

After retiring from Candler, John and Adrienne spent a number of years hosting family members, colleagues, and friends from near and far at their wonderful home in the North Georgia mountains. John loved taking guests on horseback rides and enjoying long, lively conversations on the porch. Planning and going on trips with Adrienne also brought him great joy and, together, they eagerly shared their experiences to help others plan voyages of their own. Another passion of John's was baseball, celebrating the ups and downs of the Atlanta Braves with family and friends. John will be remembered for his devotion to Adrienne, his powerful singing voice, his wisdom, and for his incredible kindness. He will be sorely missed.

John leaves behind his beloved wife of 60 years, Adrienne Kelly Carr, three proud sons, David McLain Carr (wife Colleen Conway), Robert DeMott Carr (wife Ruth Dinkins), and John Mark Carr, and nine grandchildren, Talia Comorau, Remy Carr, Ian and Maddie Grant, Kelly, Elizabeth, Emilie, Samuel and Juliette Carr.

A service of remembrance and celebration will be held at Pebblebrook at Park Springs, in Stone Mountain, GA, on October 27th at 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, any who wish can make a donation to Candler School of Theology at Emory University.

Ad, my deepest sorrow along with you. John's ministry at The Church of the Saviour (along with you) changed my whole vision of the church. I hear the service on 11-18 was great and the last hymn was "Come Let Us Celebrate". I now live in NYC near a daughter, Angela. I know how tough these days are for you; cry when you want to. Love, Janice Stotler
