Jude SMITH Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

SMITH, Jude Jude Anne Phillips Smith, 71, of Atlanta, died at home on April 27, 2013 after a lifetime battle with kidney disease, which included two kidney transplants, and a 15 year fight against Parkinson's disease. She was born in Savannah, Georgia to the late John Aldrick Phillips, Sr. and the late Margaret Applewhite Phillips. She was a 1959 graduate of St. Vincent's Academy and a 1961 graduate of Armstrong Junior College where she was voted "Most Outstanding Sophomore." In 1962, Jude married Joseph Braxton Smith, also of Savannah, and the two moved to Atlanta. Jude stayed busy raising their two daughters, Michaela and Natalie, volunteering at their schools (Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic School and Marist School) and taking them to numerous activities. Jude was also a tremendous support to her husband, Joe, as he built his CPA practice, Smith & Howard, P.C. For years, Jude was actively involved in the Silver Lake Garden Club, the Dunwoody Hills Club, St. Jude's Circle, two bridge groups, and bible study, was the owner of Phillips-Smith Interiors, and served on the board of the Atlanta Kidney Foundation and volunteered her time to many other worthwhile organizations. After the birth of her five beloved grandchildren, Jude spent many happy years attending their Baptisms, First Communions, Confirmations, sporting events, chorus concerts, awards ceremonies, and musicals. She will be greatly missed. Jude is survived by her husband of 50 years, Joseph Braxton Smith; daughters Michaela Smith Young and Natalie Smith Childs; sons-in-law F. Scott Young and James Whidden Childs, Sr; grandchildren Sarah Margaret Young, Joseph Braxton Young, Nettie Smith Childs, James Whidden Childs, Jr. and Joseph Phillips Childs; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Michael & Pamela Smith, all of Atlanta; brother and sister-in-law Robert & Harriet Phillips of West Chester, PA; brother and sister-in-law John and Suzanne Phillips of Columbus, GA; sister Michelle P.
