JUlia BALLARD Obituary
BALLARD, Julia Brewer Julia Brewer Ballard was born in Atlanta on November 18, 1927, and died peacefully at home on August 25, 2017. She was the daughter of the late Julia Mayes and Capus Brewer, and a fourth-generation Atlantan. Julia was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 60 years, McCary Ballard, and her brother, Capus Brewer Jr. Julia attended R L Hope Elementary School and Washington Seminary in Atlanta. She graduated from Mt. Vernon College in Washington DC, and then attended the University of Georgia. Julia was an active member of the Junior League of Atlanta, the Cathedral of Saint Philip, and the Primrose Garden Club. She enjoyed playing golf and bridge, traveling, and, for many years, running the Peachtree Road Race. She also loved books and was an avid reader. Julia loved going to horse shows and the barn with her daughters and granddaughter, and watching them ride. She loved animals of all kind and allowed her daughters to have many pets, including monkeys, pigs, cats, ponies, horses, turtles, an Afghan hound, and even an alligator, as long as her daughters abided by the "no white shoes after Labor Day" rule. The last two years were difficult for Julia, but "she always looked beautiful" - a comment made by her devoted grandson, the nurses and doctors who cared for her, and the friends who visited her. She remained feisty until the end, as she had throughout her entire life. Julia is survived by her two daughters, Julie E. Ballard, MD and Helen McCary Ballard; her two beloved grandchildren, Harry McCary Weeks and Emily Ballard Weeks; her devoted niece, Anne McCary Ballard; and her nephew, W. Perry Ballard III MD. Julia will be missed by her many family members and friends, and her devoted caretakers, Paula Walker and Mae Mumford. A reception in memory of Julia will be held in the Court of Gratitude at the Cathedral of Saint Philip on Thursday, September 28 at 2 pm. She will be interred at a private service in the garden of The Cathedral of Saint Philip. Those wishing to make donations in remembrance of Julia may do so to The Shepherd Center, Development Office, 2020 Peachtree Rd, Atlanta, GA. 303091465.
