Katherine JOHNSON Obituary
JOHNSON, Katherine Katherine Cox "Katy" Johnson was born on November 18th, 1944 to Anita T. and A. Melville Cox in Washington, DC. She attended Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda, MD. She grew up spending time on the Chesapeake Bay and developed a love of boats and the sea that lasted her whole life. Katy attended Emory at Oxford and was a proud graduate of the University of Georgia with a BA in Education in '66 and a Masters of Education '67. Katy was very active in the AOPi sorority, both as a student and as an alumnus, and was a huge Bulldawg fan. She married Bob Johnson on June 22nd 1968 in Chevy Chase, Maryland. As a young woman she appeared on the original Jeopardy TV show, winning a refrigerator and a set of encyclopedias. After relocating several times, they settled in Atlanta in 1979. She helped start Cox Sales and Service Inc. when she moved to Atlanta where she served as President of the company for 36 years. Prior to her career at Cox Sales and Service, she was a teacher. Katy was active in volunteering with many local causes, from The Fox Theater and The Olympics to Atlanta Boxer Rescue and local battered woman's shelters. A voracious reader, she read the Atlanta Journal Constitution and Wall Street Journal every day and devoured books. She enjoyed playing bridge, tennis, and golf (9 Holers) at the Atlanta Athletic Club and was passionate about traveling the world with her husband and family. Katy and Bob were active members and regularly attended Duluth First United Methodist Church. She passed away peacefully at home December 14th after a long fight with cancer. Katy was absolutely devoted to her family. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Bob and three children: Robert III, William, and Jennifer Sittler and her two grandchildren - Annabelle and Leela, who all live in the Atlanta area. The service will be held at First United Methodist Church of Duluth on December 21st at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in Katy's name can be made to Atlanta Boxer Rescue or The Atlanta Mission.
