Katherine Weems CALVERT Obituary
CALVERT, Katherine Weems In Memory of Katherine Weems Calvert May 7, 1925 October 28, 2017 Katherine Weems Calvert ("Kay"), 92, of Dunwoody, Georgia died October 28, 2017, after a period of declining health. Kay was born and lived in Birmingham, Alabama, until, following her graduation from high school, she enrolled in the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, where she earned a bachelor's degree in home economics. In 1947, she married George W. Calvert of Union, Mississippi, whom she had met while both were students at the University of Alabama after World War II; they remained devoted partners for almost 61 years until his death in 2008. Kay and George moved to Atlanta in the early 1950s after he obtained his LLM degree from Duke University and accepted a position with IRS Chief Counsel's Office. From her arrival in Atlanta until her health no longer permitted, Kay was an active church and community volunteer. For over 56 years Kay was a member of Oglethorpe Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, where she taught Sunday School and vacation bible school; served as chairperson of the nursery; helped in the church's food pantry and bargain shop; and folded bulletins for Sunday morning worship services. Kay was both a dedicated member and officer of the PTA at Skyland Elementary School in Brookhaven while her children were students there. At the Fellowship Mission in Atlanta's Grant Park community, she unselfishly gave her time and smiles for decades to the neighborhood children participating in the mission's after-school and other activities, some of whom would return years later to see "Miss Kay." Kay also was an accomplished cook who worked for many years with author, chef, and cooking show host Nathalie Dupree at Rich's Cooking School in Atlanta and thereafter. Breakfasts during the family's annual vacations to Pawleys Island were not complete without Kay's cheese biscuits. Kay is survived by her son Warren (Debbie) of Peachtree Corners; her daughter Elise Mills (Steve) of Greenville, SC; granddaughters Leah Calvert (Tommy Sauter) of Atlanta, Juliana Mills of Greenville, SC, and Lauren Mills of Columbia, SC; and great-granddaughter Eva Sauter. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 9, 2017, at Oglethorpe Presbyterian Church, 3016 Lanier Drive, NE, Atlanta. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in Kay's memory to Oglethorpe Presbyterian Church.
