Loyd COX

1920 - 2017 Obituary Condolences
COX, Loyd Loyd Cox of Marietta, GA passed away peacefully at home in his sleep at the age of 97 on the morning of Friday, October 6, 2017. He was born in Hardeman County, TN on April 17, 1920 to George Oscar Cox and Minnie Ester Horton. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Majorie Cox, his daughter Nancy Starratt, his son David Cox, grandsons Brent Starratt and Lewis Cox, granddaughters Samantha Starratt and Abigail Cox, and great-grandson Brent Starratt III. He was preceded in death by his three brothers Elliot, James and Toby Cox. Loyd grew up poor in rural Alabama during the depths of the great depression, and from the age of 7 was raised by his single mother. Beginning at the age of 10 he helped his family scratch out a living working as a sharecropper and doing other farm work for hire. By age 14, he and his brother Elliot had added pulpwood and sawmill work to their efforts to provide for the family. During school months he received financial assistance for working as a janitor through the National Youth Administration. Six months after graduating high school at the age of 21, he enlisted in the Navy following the bombing of Pearl Harbor. After his discharge in 1946, he made use of the GI Bill and enrolled at the University of Alabama. He completed his Bachelor of Science Degree in December of 1949, and immediately enrolled in graduate school. His graduate education was interrupted when he was called back into the Navy in September 1950 to serve in the Korean War. During his second tour of duty he met and married Margie Fullen while in San Diego, then returned to the University of Alabama after his second discharge and completed his Master's Degree in Educational Administration and Supervision in the summer of 1952. He taught for 2 years in the Dalton GA City School system before moving to Marietta. Loyd Cox will be remembered by the greater Marietta community for his 28 years of service to the Marietta City School system as a teacher and administrator. He served at Marietta High School as a teacher and assistant football coach, assistant principal, and principal before being elevated to the post of Superintendent of Schools in 1965 where he served for 16 years. He was a true believer in the power of education to transform people's lives. He loved God, his family, his country, his church and Alabama Crimson Tide football. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home in Marietta, GA. The family will receive visitors at 1:00 pm immediately before the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to the Cup of Kindness organization at the Marietta First Baptist Church. 770-428-1511
