Mark Adams MIXON Obituary
MIXON, Mark Adams Mark Adams Mixon passed away on September 7, 2017, at age 60 in Atlanta, Georgia. The rock of his family, his quiet presence was felt in every room he entered. Mark lived a happy, purposeful and fun life, often dancing for the enjoyment of embarrassing his children and grandchildren. Born to Harold Thomas "Cork" and Mary Ellen Mixon in Brunswick, Georgia on December 2, 1956, Mark attended Brunswick High School, where he played football and was known for his stylish 70s outfits. Mark graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1978. He was President of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, involved in Student Government, member of the Ramblin' Wreck Club and founder of the Georgia Tech Flying Circus Froth Association, the Frisbee golf club. In 1993, Mark received his Master of Business Administration from Georgia State University. Over the last 30 years, Mark worked in the Oil and Gas industry, most recently as Chief Business Development Officer of MYCELX Technologies Corporation. He directed the Company's expansion to Houston and the Middle East, spending extensive time in Saudi Arabia as well as Qatar and Oman. Mark was part of the executive management team that led the Company's initial public offering on the London Stock Exchange in August of 2011. A natural teacher, Mark took an interest in the lives of family, friends and co-workers by always offering support and guidance. This extended to coaching girls softball for many years at the Northside Youth Organization, The Lovett School and Pace Academy. Mark's passion for the game was infectious and as a patient and encouraging leader, he taught each of his players to be resilient and confident on and off the field. Mark was an accomplished chef, who brought his large family together with his wonderful meals. Honoring his mother's memory, he passed his love of food and family gatherings to his children. Always intellectually curious, Mark was an avid reader and decided to learn to play the piano in the last year of his life. He also enjoyed teaching his children and grandchildren the nuances of chess. Mark's life continues to inspire his loving wife, Connie, who Mark called "my bride" even after 30 years of marriage, as well as three children: Martin N. Underwood, Jr. and his wife Clay, Natalie Underwood Shirley and her husband Blake and Morgan Mixon. He is also survived by his sisters: Tracy Mixon and Dawn Mixon Bennett and her husband Preston; mother-in-law, Winnie LeClercq; father-in-law, John Mansfield, Sr. and his wife Betty; sisters-in-law: Jenny Hager and her husband Mark, and Sherrie Douglas and her husband Jim; brothers-in-law: John Mansfield, Jr. and his wife Jill and Michael Mansfield and his wife Kim; nephew, Cole Bennett; and five grandchildren: Winnie Underwood, Eugenia Underwood, Frances Underwood, Blake Shirley, Jr. and Jack Shirley. Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Harold Thomas "Cork" and Mary Ellen Mixon. The memorial service to honor Mark will be held at The Cathedral of St. Philip on Wednesday September 13th, 2017 at 10:00am with a reception following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to The Cathedral of St Philip in Atlanta, St Mark's Episcopal Church in Brunswick, Georgia and The Northside Youth Organization (NYO) Girls Softball Program.
